The Rift is an ocean of storming meaning rather than a void of empty space—a shifting, hostile medium where light, distance, and time are only occasionally obeyed suggestions. Ships don’t traverse it so much as survive brief intrusions into a living, reactive environment that resents their presence.

Rift-Space

Atmosphere: Vacuum

Gravity: Zero Gravity

Navigators describe the Rift in terms of sensations more than coordinates: pressure in the skull, colors that correspond to moods, the taste of particular fears or devotions on the tongue. There is no natural “up” or “down”; orientation depends on ship fields and Navigator focus, and even then can slip under stress.

  • Visibility: Often metaphorical rather than literal—sensor overlays render currents as color bands, eddies as distortions, and nearby realms as looming silhouettes of architecture or landscape.

  • Physics: Local pockets may briefly mimic Real-space (normal inertia, clear distances), but these are islands in a sea of warped trajectories and non-linear paths.

  • Time: Subject to drift; short subjective transits can correspond to long external delays or rare “early arrivals,” especially near scars and storms.

Rift-Burgs and space-time scars act as rare anchors, creating pockets where familiar physics partially reassert themselves amid the chaos.

Rift-Realms are large, semi-stable “worlds” inside the Rift—pseudospatial landscapes where Intention, Awareness, and Devotion congeal into places, laws, and societies. Each realm is defined by a particular configuration of Devotion and naturally attracts, shapes, and recycles beings that resonate with that blend.

Rift Storms- Massive, shifting disturbances where currents collide, often tied to large-scale emotional or ideological events in Real-space. Rift-Current Shear;

Rift-Taint Zones- Regions saturated with unstable Mana that actively corrupts what passes through. Leaving such a zone does not guarantee the taint leaves with it.

Time Shear - Localized anomalies where Time behaves inconsistently relative to the Standard Cycle. Chronologists treat reports of new shear zones as near-emergencies, as they can cripple entire trade chains or isolate systems.

Planar Bleed Fronts- Where the Rift presses hard against Real-space—or vice versa—the boundary thins, creating planar bleed fronts. These fronts can slowly “eat” nearby routes, forcing factions to reroute or fight back with immense ritual and technological effort.

Environmental Features

Currents and Eddies

The primary "terrain" of the Rift is its currents—rivers of aligned Intention and Devotion that can carry ships between distant Real-space systems.

  • Main Currents: Broad, relatively stable flows used as interstellar highways by most Navigators. Safer, but heavily trafficked and often surveilled or contested.

  • Eddies: Local loops where currents circle back on themselves, ideal for ambushes, hiding, or going missing for a while—willingly or not.

  • Dead Water: Regions of conceptual stagnation where currents are weak and progress becomes slow, disorienting, and resource-intensive.

Currents can subtly “lean” toward certain factions or mindsets; crews whose Devotions match the local flow may find travel smoother, while those in opposition feel constant turbulence.

Maelstrom Depths

Far from gates and scars lie the Maelstrom Depths, where psycho-reactivity is extreme.

  • Currents collide into storm-walls of rage, despair, or fanaticism.

  • Sights and sounds blur into archetypal imagery: wars-that-never-happened, cities-of-ideas, screaming constellations.

  • Navigational reference becomes nearly impossible without heavy psychic shielding and experience.

Most sane captains avoid these regions unless pursuing relics, entities, or secrets that can only exist far from spacetime’s imposed order.

Spacetime Scars

Repeated crossings and events like the Riftstorm Cataclysm have carved scars into the Rift—lanes where Space and Time cling stubbornly to the storm.

  • Stable Lanes: Reliable jump corridors; distances and durations behave semi-predictably, making them vital for commerce and military logistics.

  • Fractured Scars: Broken or decaying lanes that flicker between ordered and wild states; prime sites for ambushes and accidents.

  • Fixed Points: Rare “knots” where Metronome pulses and repeated travel have anchored a specific reference point in the Rift, often near major gates or Rift-Burgs.

Ancient Rift natives often treat scars as infections; some will attack ships simply for using them.

Proximity to Realms and Burgs

  • Realm Fringe: Near the borders of major Rift realms (heavens, hells, fey courts), the environment takes on thematic flavor—light behaves like doctrine, gravity pulls toward certain choices, and stray thoughts may briefly manifest as phantoms.

  • Burg Halo: Around Rift-Burgs, fragments of debris, leaked atmosphere, and jury-rigged defense fields create cluttered “reefs” in the storm, where currents shear and eddy on hardened matter.

These areas are rich with salvage, relics, and trapped spirits—but also heavily trafficked and often politically sensitive.
