Aquitalia, the Cove City, sits deep in the swamps and amidst the bayous along the eastern coast. Here stands the underwater Great Temple of Sikarr, whose heights are used to mark the tides, predict floods, and warn of droughts. Under the stern gaze of the Harbormaster, the city's ships ply their merchant and military trades from the Adderport, a system of sea caves and hidden coves connected by winding tunnels that the city uses as its port. Aquitalia's people have had to be daring and cunning to make their home among the swamps and their living on the high seas. Humans and umbrans in particular have thriving communities here.
Aquitalia is the home of the Great Temple to Sikarr, god of Water and Life.
The population of Aquitalia is primarily composed of Human and Umbran, but its role as a shipping hub sees all sorts of people coming and going.
Aquitalia is a swamp port with many ponds and bayous dotting the landscape. The weather is typically hot and humid, with frequent tropical storms.
Aquitalia takes its inspiration and influence from the beginning of the Age of Sail, the early Age of Discovery, Elizabethan-Era explorers, and swashbucklers from various media with garb consisting of baggy sleeves, tight doublets, bodices, and wide belts or sashes.
Known for moving goods and supplies around the continent via ships and taking on more dangerous routes than other cities are willing to risk, Aquitalia owes its preeminence to the Adderport, a system of sea caves and coves connected by winding tunnels. Often likened to a hydra's heads, the cave system of the Adderport is a natural wonder the Aquitalians have turned to their advantage by making it their primary harbor. From its hidden coves numerous mercenary companies ply the waves and a robust merchant marine takes to the seas. While the main city sees all manner of goods and wares pass through, the realm itself was a primary exporter of rice, sugarcane, rum and other spirits.
Before the fall of Aquitalia, this city was led by the Harbormaster, with many shipping companies and mercenary guilds having power and sway. The Harbormaster usually had a second in command, called the First Mate despite not actually being on a ship, who was trained on the ins and outs of running the city while keeping the shipping companies in check. Gaining the favor of the Harbormaster was of the upmost importance to the companies and mercenary guilds, as usually the person chosen for the role of First Mate is picked from the prominent members of these groups.
