“If your station fails in three places at once and every diagnostic says ‘all green,’ you don’t have a malfunction—you have gremlins.”
— Chief Maintainer Rhu Kess, Clang Ring Habitat

Description

Gremlins arise where the Rift’s reality shear brushes against dense infrastructure and data traffic, embedding fey logic into code, circuitry, and maintenance spaces. Some legends claim they are fragmented echoes of Metronome tuning gone wrong, the shards of failed timekeeping algorithms that woke up angry and hungry.

Biology

Drawing on the idea that gremlins hoard junk and nest amid clutter, Starfall nests become compact “garbage hives” inside vent clusters, maintenance shafts, abandoned data nodes, and derelict ships. They incorporate stolen circuit boards, coolant pipes, and drone shells into their warrens, which double as both traps and communal toys.

Rumors suggest that a critical mass of gremlins in a single network can warp it into a micro-fey demiplane, a "Rift-cache" where physics follow prankster logic until the system burns out or is forcibly rebooted. These caches can manifest dungeons inside servers, dreamlike glitch spaces, and hostile holoscapes.

Gremlin Family

Gremlins include multiple subtypes with shared family traits: cruelty, sabotage, cold iron weakness, hoarding, and often specific environmental focuses

Botnibs The computer glitch gremlin, is intuitively tied with the computerized devices and networks of the modern age.

Clangits Space station gremlins, know everything about the inner workings of their home stations and enjoy punishing or pranking the station's larger inhabitants who know less than they do.

Fuath- fuaths are shipwreckers incarnate

Gnackle- These gremlins relish watching other creatures suffer humiliating failure and often spend weeks or longer selecting and grooming a victim into bringing out their own downfall.

Gnagrif- Squat, surly, and perpetually covered in wet mud, gnagrifs are gremlins that infest and destroy homes.

Grimple-grimples resent the trappings of civilization

Gubbin- data gremlins—are spontaneously born from corrupted data, especially as a result of errors in artificial intelligence programs.

Jinkin- Jinkins are sadistic tinkers who steal and sabotage items and take great pride in their power to curse precious objects.

Mitflits-self-loathing and pitiful cowards, easily bullied into servitude by other creatures or even slightly more powerful mitflit leaders.

Nuglub- Nuglubs enjoy killing with a glee that other gremlins reserve for sabotage.

Pugwampi- pugwampis take disproportionate enjoyment from the accidents and missteps of other creatures.

Scrit- They make themselves the nightmare of many scribes and librarians, as they delight in nothing more than destroying books, scrolls, artwork, and other records or writing.

Vexgit-These gremlins are covered head-to-toe by a crustacean-like exoskeleton that clacks and rattles whenever a vexgit moves.
