The Highlands

The Highlands rise along the northern reaches of Bera where the rolling plains gradually lift into rugged hills and towering mountain ranges. What begins as fertile farmland slowly gives way to stone ridges, deep valleys, and winding passes carved by ancient winds and rivers. The terrain climbs steadily toward the sky until the land itself appears to strain upward, as though the mountains were reaching toward the unseen currents of the Aether above. The air grows cooler with elevation, and the winds that sweep across the peaks carry the scent of pine forests, stone, and distant snow.

Despite the harsh terrain, the Highlands are far from barren. The valleys between the mountain ridges are vibrant with life. Forests of tall evergreens blanket the slopes, streams of glacial water cut through fertile basins, and small settlements nestle within sheltered passes protected from the worst of the mountain storms. The land produces hardy crops, grazing fields for livestock, and abundant hunting grounds. Life here is not easy, but it is steady. Those who grow up in the Highlands often speak of a quiet strength within the land itself, a feeling that the mountains endure through every storm and every season.

This sense of endurance has deeply shaped the culture of the Highland people. Communities here value resilience, discipline, and loyalty to one another. Settlements tend to be smaller and tightly connected, built around central halls, shrines, or watchtowers that overlook the surrounding valleys. The people of the Highlands are known for their reliability and calm demeanor, rarely prone to sudden panic or reckless ambition. Living among the mountains teaches patience. Storms may rage across the peaks for days, but those who endure them know the skies will eventually clear.

The Faith of Nine is practiced with particular devotion throughout the Highlands. Shrines carved into mountain cliffs and small temples built of grey stone can be found scattered across the ridges and valleys. Clerics and monks often travel between settlements offering guidance, healing, and spiritual counsel to those who live far from the larger cities of the plains. The people of the Highlands see the mountains themselves as a reflection of the Primordials’ presence. Strength, balance, endurance, and wisdom are all values reinforced by the environment they inhabit.

Because of this spiritual atmosphere, the Highlands have become one of the primary sources of Clerics and Monks within Llithe. Many young initiates who feel the call of the Faith travel south to train at the Monastery of Nine, carrying with them the disciplined mindset shaped by life in the mountains. The Highlands do not produce faith through doctrine alone, but through the lived experience of surviving in harmony with the natural world.

The mountains are also home to one of the most formidable warrior lineages in the realm. House Stormcloak resides within the Highlands, a house renowned for producing some of the most disciplined fighters in Llithe. The elevated terrain provides natural training grounds where warriors must develop balance, endurance, and adaptability to fight effectively. Combat practice often takes place along steep ridges, narrow passes, and rocky plateaus where a single misstep can determine victory or defeat. Stormcloak warriors believe that if a fighter can master combat in the mountains, they can master it anywhere.

The presence of House Stormcloak has further shaped the culture of the Highlands. Martial training is respected and encouraged among many settlements, though it is often paired with strong spiritual discipline rooted in the Faith of Nine. Warriors here are taught that strength without purpose is dangerous, and that courage must be tempered by wisdom. This philosophy produces fighters who are not merely aggressive but deeply grounded in the ideals of duty and protection.

Today the Highlands stand as a region defined by balance between faith, resilience, and martial discipline. The people who live among its winds do not seek dominance or rapid expansion like the cities of Reach, nor do they focus entirely on agriculture like the plains of Bera. Instead they embody something older and steadier. The mountains endure. The faith persists. And the people of the Highlands continue to grow strong beneath the watchful silence of the peaks that surround them.
