Acuras: Pale, white-clad man with elongated features, an eye-shaped facial marking, and the power to drain blood from the Rusticulum. He invites Helena to Keph and disappears with her after she accepts.
Selina: Pale woman traveling with Acuras. She recognizes Helena's hidden ancestry, claims their peoples are related, and attempts to place her into an enchanted sleep.
Helena: Draws the Rusticulum away from the children, severs one of its controlling chains, and later encounters Acuras and Selina. She accepts their invitation in hopes of protecting her companions and learning what they know about her people.
Bjorn: Briefly controlled by the Rusticulum's chain and forced to attack Whisper. His memories connect the creature's red runes to warriors who fought during the fall of Norn.
Aronin: Leads Atherin and the seven children into a mountain cave while the Harbingers battle the Rusticulum, earning the children's trust as their protector.
Atherin: Mourning widow who leaves her cottage with the rescued children and agrees to seek safety at the Twilight Temple.
Corrupted Celestial Power: Normandy interprets the magic within the Rusticulum as ancient and celestial in origin, but twisted into something unholy and fundamentally wrong.
Twilight Protection: Torrin channels moonlight through his sanctuary, healing aura, and protective dome to preserve the group during and after the Rusticulum's attack.
The Rusticulum: Elite force or order within the Chain represented by heavily armored, nearly indestructible warriors. Knowledge of their creation and power is restricted to the Chain's highest ranks.
Cult of the Iron Chain: Black-robed followers found drained and dead in the ruined village. Their physical chains can subjugate opponents who continue resisting them.
Shadow Folk: Selina's term for Helena's people from their shrouded homeland. She claims that her own kind shares the same ancestry.
White-Clad Strangers: Acuras, Selina, and their pale companions. They oppose the Chain's intrusion into their territory but display predatory hunger and powers at least as frightening as the Rusticulum's.
Armored Rusticulum: Enormous human figure enclosed within exceptionally heavy armor. Its burned body survives catastrophic wounds while red runes maintain or restore its function.
Blind Jackal Creature: Pale gray, skinless-looking hound that hunts through sound, runs on all fours, and can bite through a tree. Acuras treats it as a beloved hunting animal.
Mainland Forest Fire: Conflagration accidentally started when Normandy casts a fire spell in near-total darkness. Its light exposes the Rusticulum's blood-covered armor and the human body inside it.
Rusticulum Chain Fragment: Heavy black metal severed by Helena and recovered from a tree. Fingernail gouges along its length record the struggles of people previously captured by it.
Helvegen: Bjorn's all-blade. He repeatedly strikes the Rusticulum's helmet with it, eventually breaking the metal enough to expose the burned human remains inside.
Helena's Wine: Rare bottle that fascinates Acuras and Selina. Its age and quality elevate Helena from prey to an honored prospective guest, although it does not remove the danger.
Torrin's Purple Book: Focus through which Torrin casts translation, deathlike concealment, sanctuary magic, and other new spells while exploring the mainland.
Chain Subjugation: A barbed physical chain that suppresses a victim's will. When it pierces Bjorn, the Rusticulum forces him to recognize himself as part of the Chain and attack Whisper.
Rusticulum Runes: Sickly red markings hidden within the armor's seams. They ignite after the warrior suffers mortal damage, sustaining a body that should no longer be capable of fighting.
Vyr's Shadow Blade: Weapon repeatedly formed from Vyr's own shadow and hurled through the darkness. It drains life from its targets and proves capable of penetrating the Rusticulum's defenses.
Protective Dome: Opaque shelter Torrin creates across the entrance to the refugees' cave. It bars outsiders, maintains a comfortable interior, and allows the group to rest safely after the battle.
Blood Draining: Power used by the white-clad strangers to lift the Rusticulum and empty its body of blood, accomplishing in moments what the Harbingers could not achieve through ordinary combat.
Feign Death and Invisibility: Spells Torrin uses to hide Bjorn and himself when Acuras and Selina detect the Harbingers near the ruined village.
Atherin's Cottage: Forest refuge abandoned after the Rusticulum locates the seven children sheltered there.
Mountain Cave: Narrow refuge where Aronin leads Atherin and the children. Torrin seals its entrance with a magical dome for the night.
Ruined Village: Chain-devastated settlement revisited by the Harbingers. The remaining cultists and the mother are dead, the children are missing, and Acuras's people occupy its center.
Keph: Destination named by Acuras when he invites Helena to accompany him. The Harbingers now have both a rescue imperative and a direct reason to approach the feared stronghold.
Rusticulum at Norn: Bjorn remembers smaller, paladin-like members of the Rusticulum descending upon his warriors during the fall of Norn. Even dismemberment and impalement failed to stop them.
Restricted Chain Knowledge: The Rusticulum's powers are unknown to common Chain adherents and to Bjorn. Only those at the highest levels of command understand how the warriors are created or sustained.
Claimed Blood Debt: Acuras's people accuse the Chain of entering their lands and spilling their blood. Their attack suggests an older territorial conflict between two deadly mainland powers.
Shared Ancestry: Selina recognizes Helena immediately and links the white-clad strangers to the shadow folk, implying a forgotten division or transformation within their common lineage.
