Characters

• Alderian Titus: Ancient enemy from Torin's recovered memory. He wields the Dark Scepter against the Vey and speaks as though catastrophic loss justifies his plan.

• Torin: Remembers fighting Titus before Gavra existed, infiltrates the ruined Arcanium alone, discovers Ceptholda's body, and recovers several artifacts and clues.

• Zandra: Identified by Matthias as a fledgling god. Her attempt to conceal the party from the Stygian Seven grows harder and more dangerous with time.

• Matthias: Normandy's mysterious magical guide. He explains that gods still walk the world, challenges Normandy to think beyond mortal rules, and refuses to solve the problem for him.

• Madame Iris / Irene: Proprietor of the Blooming Petal and surviving member of a powerful Gavran house. She expects political enemies to seize her establishment and prepares to flee to Piln.

• Lily: Performer at the Blooming Petal who receives Whisper's map of the Reef, kisses him goodbye, and warns him not to let destiny blind him to the life before him.

• Wylas Velpa: Wealthy head of the Velpa Trading Company, found inside the burned Arcanium with Gavran guards. He orders the site destroyed again and demands that no evidence remain.

• Ceptholda: Leader associated with the Gavra Arcanium. Torin finds her dead from smoke and fire inside her sealed upper chamber.

• Father Patches: Whisper's grandfather, head bishop of the Church of Tides, and the secret Hidden Father. He gives Whisper a confidential assassination command.

• Barry: Gavran guard pursuing the party through the Arcanium. He falls through the burned stairs and dies.

Gods and Religion

• Eth: Goddess of New Beginnings worshiped at Gavra's Church of Tides. Her statue produces black water when Vyr approaches and touches it.

• Umtheras: God of Shadow. Vyr invokes Umtheras before drawing the last life from the suffering rust monster and receives a sense that its death should be quick.

• Zandra's Divinity: Matthias calls Zandra a god with a lowercase title, weakened by dwindling believers and power. Her true name and domain remain unrevealed.

• Church of Tides: Main temple to Eth in Gavra and the public seat of Father Patches.

Organizations and Societies

• Arcanium: Secret order formerly housed in Gavra's clock tower. Brill's memory shows a thriving vertical laboratory devoted to magic, glister, and knowledge before the fire.

• Velpa Trading Company: Powerful civil house controlling the Shattered Isles and glint mines. Wylas Velpa's presence inside the Arcanium links the company to the destruction or cleanup.

• Yore and Gander: Shipping company marked by the ouroboros and connected to the Arcanium's black-glint supply. Madame Iris considers it one possible force behind Gavra's coup.

• Cult of the Iron Chain: Fanatical movement named in the Arcanium's plague research as a suspected link among outbreaks across Scarsden.

• Stygian Seven: Ancient armored enemies from whom Zandra is temporarily hiding the party.

• Dread Stalkers: Allied pirates assembling for departure while the companions complete their final errands.

• Stalkers: Criminal society whose coin Normandy recovers from Tavros's remains.

Creatures and Nature

• Mimic: Predator disguised as the treasure chest left in the sewer. The party kills it after it attacks Whisper and Normandy.

• Plaque Rat: Enormous sewer creature that survives the previous battle, pursues the party, sprays acid, and nearly traps them before becoming stuck in the narrow exit.

• Rust Monster: Mortally wounded metal-eater found beside the false chest. Vyr ends its suffering and draws away its departing life.

• Rue the Darkling: Emerges from Whisper's shadow at the Blooming Petal and continues traveling with the group despite alarming the pirates.

Items and Technology

• Stalker Coin: Tavros's coin, recovered from the sewer by Normandy with Mage Hand and returned to Whisper's possession.

• Map of the Reef: Valuable map inherited from Whisper's Gram. Whisper gives it to Lily as protection and a source of money if she needs help.

• Mimic Mass: Hard-centered ball of flesh pulled from the dead mimic by Vyr. Its nature and value are unknown.

• Crystalline Fragment: Torin's light-bearing shard becomes white-hot and opens the sealed door to Ceptholda's chamber without being consumed.

• Ouroboros Necklace: Necklace removed from Ceptholda's body, bearing the serpent-eating-its-tail symbol associated with Yore and Gander and the Arcanium.

• Purple Gilded Book: Small leather-bound book recovered by Torin from Ceptholda's desk.

• Tomorrow Doll: Ancient blue-skinned doll found behind a painting in Ceptholda's chamber. Contact triggers a tender memory in which a woman chooses the name Tomorrow.

• Black Water Vial: Vial filled by Vyr after water from Eth's statue turns black in her presence.

• Damaged Arcanium Notes: Partially burned notebooks collected by Torin while climbing the tower, including records of promising glister experiments.

Magic and Cosmology

• Ancient Torin Memory: Torin remembers himself as a Veyan defender fighting Titus thousands of years before modern Gavra, confirming that his identity reaches into the world's erased history.

• Ithelion Barrier: The distant light of the Ithelion prevents Titus from advancing inland during Torin's memory, though Titus insists that the protection will not last forever.

• Zandra's Concealment: A divine effect that interferes with perception or fate to stop the Stygian Seven from finding the party for a limited time.

• Arcanium Light Door: A metal seal designed to receive light. Torin's Veyan knowledge and crystalline fragment activate it.

• Vyr's Shadowed Presence: Light trails away from Vyr inside the Church of Tides, and Eth's flowing water turns black when she touches it.

• Vision of Tomorrow: The doll releases a memory of warmth, laughter, and a loved child, but the people within the vision remain unidentified.

Locations and Realms

• Ancient Gavra Shore: Black-sand coast beside the Sequestered Sea before the city of Gavra exists, where Torin confronts Titus amid an invasion.

• Saddles and Sage: Closed Gavran stable from which the six travelers take riding horses to complete their errands before sunrise.

• Gavra Undercroft: Sewer complex revisited to recover Tavros's coin, where the party fights a mimic and flees the plaque rat.

• Arcanium Clock Tower: Burned secret headquarters containing ruined laboratories, plague research, Ceptholda's chamber, and intruding Velpa forces.

• Church of Tides: Temple to Eth where Whisper says farewell to Father Patches and receives the Hidden Father's command.

• Piln: City where Madame Iris owns property and intends to seek refuge after abandoning the endangered Blooming Petal.

• East Wharf: Rendezvous point for the waiting ship. The separated companions still intend to reach it before sunrise.

History and Lore

• Torin and Titus: The recovered battle proves that Torin opposed Alderian Titus before Gavra was founded and before the Ithelion's light weakened to its present state.

• Brill's Initiation: Brill was inducted into the Arcanium with the warning that its knowledge bound him to the order and could force him to leave Scarsden forever.

• Arcanium Glister Program: The order believed properly controlled glister could become an answer to Tyve's dangers, despite its destructive use elsewhere.

• Scarsden Plague Map: Surviving research marks scattered plague incidents, including the farm near Calgary, and repeatedly questions whether the Iron Chain is responsible.

• Gavran Coup: Madame Iris reports that major political figures have been killed and that the balance among Gavra's civil houses is collapsing.

• Hidden Father's Command: Father Patches links an unnamed man to a corrosive, addictive force and the Chain, then asks Whisper to kill him as the Hidden Father's last request.
