Characters

• Selendra Cassiandros: Marquis of Gavra, murdered by Derek at the Southern Eye. Her departing soul asks the Harbingers to protect her people and expresses fear of figures watching from the darkness.

• Derek: Southern Eye guard who conceals the presence of shipwrecked Gavran survivors for two days, invokes his ancestors during an attack upon Cassiandros, and is killed by Aronin.

• Aronin: Bard traveling with the Harbingers who finds Derek attacking Cassiandros, kills him, and is left distraught by failing to save the Marquis.

• Aemon Toft: Insecure commander of the Southern Eye. He helps recover the shipwreck survivors, mourns Cassiandros, and remains behind to confront the succession crisis.

• Rensselaer: Gavran survivor wearing his fallen captain's coat. He commands roughly thirty sailors and soldiers from the only known vessel to turn back from Silas's doomed advance into the vortex.

• Wylas Velpa: Head of the Velpa Trading Company whose arriving ships give him the strongest force on the island. The Harbingers detain him, use him to secure their departure, and release him as he vows to rebuild his empire.

• Whisper: Rejects Mathias's offer to exchange Lily's soul for Cassiandros, offers his own soul instead, and later throws the shackled Wylas into the harbor before the group pulls him back.

• Mathias Ephelthine: Ancient voice who offers to restore Cassiandros through a soul-for-soul exchange and tests how Whisper values Lily, the Marquis, his companions, and himself.

• Ilk: Keeper of the Black Worm who appears aboard the Maelstrodomus. He claims to serve a greater purpose, deals in dreams, and offers to reveal the stories carried by objects.

• Anseletta: Woman whom Derek may have loved and possible member of his hidden family history. Her connection to the assassination remains unconfirmed.

Gods and Religion

• Ithelion: Lost light of Piln whose distant radiance appears as golden strands near the vortex and begins refilling Helena's vial.

• Eth: Goddess invoked through an old psalm describing her tears as light through the night. Helena interprets the falling strands as a possible blessing from her.

• The Tangled One: Sea goddess whose frightened new adherents remain among the Southern Eye refugees after Gavra's destruction.

• Callus: Name associated with the impossible bridge Ilk claims to have crossed before reaching Tyve. His exact identity and relationship to Ilk are not yet established.

• The Black Worm: Mysterious creature or power kept by Ilk whose secretions create visions. Ilk says it hungers and may reveal hidden truths to Torrin.

Organizations and Societies

• Harbingers of Light: Prepare the Maelstrodomus, recover survivors of the lost armada, witness Cassiandros's assassination, and abandon the unstable Southern Eye for the journey toward Tyve.

• Stewards of Gavra: Shattered Gavran government whose surviving houses and officers lack an uncontested process for replacing Cassiandros.

• House of the Ledger and House of the Liege: Governmental houses expected to participate in choosing new leadership, though most of their surviving authority is absent or uncertain.

• Velpa Trading Company: Commercial and military force arriving in numbers large enough to make Wylas the strongest claimant at the Southern Eye.

• Gavran Armada Survivors: Roughly thirty sailors and soldiers from a galleon that escaped Silas's possessed advance into the vortex and wrecked upon the island.

• Dread Stalkers: Snakeye Joe and the surviving pirates who provision, weather, and operate the Maelstrodomus for its coming passage.

Creatures and Nature

• Sleeping Giant: Twelve-foot humanoid found in a northern coastal alcove beside a raft, a fire, and the remains of a cow. The Harbingers choose not to wake him.

• Undead Presence: One or more undead beings sensed somewhere in the waters near the Southern Eye, separate from the sleeping giant and left unidentified.

• Vortex: Violent ocean passage that destroyed nearly every ship in Silas's armada and now lies along the Maelstrodomus's route toward Tyve.

• Golden Lightfall: Slow strands of light descending near the vortex, sparkling upon contact and gathering inside Helena's vial instead of disappearing.

• Deepening Darkness: Lightless condition surrounding the Southern Eye and the departing vessel after the loss of Piln.

Items and Technology

• Maelstrodomus: Velpan prototype being weathered, provisioned, and crewed for the voyage through the vortex. The Harbingers depart aboard it after forcing Wylas to yield passage.

• Stefon's Vial: Helena's previously empty vessel, which draws in the golden strands of Ithelion light and begins glowing again.

• Forged Succession Document: False record created amid the crisis to claim that Madame Iris can oppose or replace Wylas through Gavran governmental authority.

• Wylas's Shackles: Restraints used to move Wylas secretly through the keep's cellars and compel his cooperation at the ship.

History and Lore

• Loss of Silas's Armada: Under magical control, Silas drives Gavra's fleet into the vortex. Ship after ship is destroyed, while Rensselaer's damaged vessel turns back and eventually wrecks at the Southern Eye.

• Concealment of the Survivors: Derek learns of the wreck roughly two days before the Harbingers and Aemon but withholds the report from the keep.

• Assassination of Cassiandros: Derek repeatedly stabs the Marquis while invoking an ancestral grievance. Aronin kills him but cannot save her.

• Cassiandros's Final Charge: Her departing soul asks the Harbingers to protect the people of Gavra and warns that the past has caught up with her.

• Velpan Succession Claim: Wylas's soldiers declare him Gavra's rightful heir while the recognized governmental houses remain scattered or destroyed.
