Calum del Mortez: Knight Reverend of the Grey Knights of Ithelias. He remembers Magda and the Nornian refugees who passed through Tch’nev approximately twenty-five years ago.
Elos del Mortez: Calum’s son and a Grey Knight. He recognizes Bjorn, welcomes the travelers, and vouches for Vyr before the Tome of Stars.
Cass: A twenty-two-year-old Ilanari squire and skilled archer. She fires the warning arrows at the approaching party and later takes a romantic interest in Whisper.
Angelos: Keeper of Secrets for the Grey Knights. His body has been altered by prolonged service to the Tome of Stars.
Jonathan: The Grey Knight credited with killing the Ursinon served during the feast.
Vyr: Receives a warning from Phaedras and is chosen to look upon the Tome of Stars.
Phaedras: Appears in Vyr’s vision first as a mortal scholar and later as a shadow with eyes of pure light.

Phaedras: Goddess of stars and patron of the Grey Knights. She was once a scholar whose final writings drove mortal readers to madness.
Sethis: Goddess of twilight. The Grey Knights of Ithelias were the first mortal people to bend the knee to her.
The Unidentified Woman: A benevolent but immensely powerful figure whom mortal Phaedras followed. Vyr sees this same woman selecting the members of the party.
The Nornian Pilgrimage: A sacred journey to the Veng’namar Plateau where Nornian pilgrims hope to commune with their ancestors.

Grey Knights of Ithelias: An ancient order rooted in the era of the Dragon Wars. The remaining knights protect the Tome of Stars from the world and the world from its knowledge.
Keepers of Secrets: Individuals selected to guard and interpret the Tome. Becoming a Keeper is considered a final sacrifice.

Ursinon: An enormous bear hunted by the Grey Knights and prepared for the welcoming feast.
Eldritch Horrors: Amalgamated beings that strip away Phaedras’s mortal flesh during Vyr’s vision.
The Frozen Dead: The ancestral dead said to lie beneath the glaciers of the Veng’namar Plateau.
The Blue-Eyed Presence: An unidentified entity seen within a frozen, black-spired keep at the conclusion of Vyr’s vision.

Tome of Stars: Phaedras’s unique, ever-changing holy manuscript. Its words cannot be copied by mortal hands, and unworthy readers become permanently lost within its pages.
Cass’s Bow: A modified longbow capable of firing with extraordinary precision and force.
Dragon’s Milk: A powerful alcoholic drink made by the people and knights of Tch’nev.
Nornian Blood: A traditional Nornian drink shared by Bjorn and Calum.
Warm Coats: Four pieces of cold-weather clothing provided by the Grey Knights for the journey to Ilanar.

Phaedras’s Apparition: A moving shadow with star-like eyes visible only to Vyr. Its voice resonates directly within her soul.
The Tome’s Judgment: The Tome selects a reader considered stalwart, brave, and true. It favors those who embody both light and darkness.
Phaedras’s Transformation: Eldritch beings remove the scholar’s mortal body until only her shadow remains, then pluck out her eyes and leave light shining through the darkness.
The Mountain Door: A sealed doorway shown opening toward a brilliant light while shadowy entities emerge from within.
Keph and Sethis’s Sight: The party has escaped the immediate gaze of Keph, but the closing revelation suggests they remain under the observation of powers connected to Sethis.

Tch’nev: A remote fortified settlement and home of the Grey Knights of Ithelias.
The Keep of Tch’nev: The knights’ central stronghold, beneath which Angelos and the Tome of Stars are hidden.
The Tome Dungeon: A damp subterranean complex whose padded cells contain those driven mad by the Tome.
Ilanar: The final settlement before the Veng’namar Plateau. Calum warns that its people are afflicted by paranoia.
Veng’namar Plateau: A glacial region containing the Nornian pilgrimage route and the ancestral dead.
The Frozen Keep: A black-spired structure embedded within the glacier and occupied by an unidentified blue-eyed presence.

The Decline of the Grey Knights: Only around forty knights remain. Their vows, isolation, and inability to replenish their ranks have condemned the order to a gradual death.
The Primarch: An ancient knight commemorated by a statue in Tch’nev. He fought beside a forgotten people during the War of Fang and Fire.
The Birth of Phaedras: Phaedras recorded forbidden cosmic knowledge, was killed by the knights, and returned as a divine shadow after eldritch beings stripped away her mortal form.
The Failed Burning of the Tome: The knights attempted to destroy Phaedras’s blood-covered manuscript, but it survived the pyre.
The Nornian Exodus: Magda and Bjorn’s people passed through Tch’nev roughly twenty-five years ago while fleeing the mainland.
