Characters
Helena: Communes with the dying willow and chooses to free its trapped mortal souls rather than preserve the ancient memories needed for the Veyan device. Her decision ends the plague's hold upon the surviving Lythans.
Bjorn: Rallies the restored Lythans around Skjold and begins leading them toward Slyphash. He later defends himself against one of the Vey outside the keep.
Bjork: Encourages Helena while she struggles against the willow and helps persuade the Lythans to accept Bjorn as a unifying leader.
Torrin: Recovers the spear component of the All-Blade and enters Slyphash to meet the surviving Vey. They recognize him as the secondborn son of their king but challenge his place in their plans.
Normandy Borthal: Uses Aran Melosis's sending stone to deceive Angela Thedon and learn more about the Dios Ostium. He later confronts Mathias and survives a beam that disintegrates his cloak.
Mathias Ephelthine: Hunts the freed Lythans after Angela discovers Normandy's deception. He dismisses them as prisoners of Tyve, tests Normandy's power, and retreats after hearing the roar from Slyphash.
Thalmos: A surviving Vey who has pursued a dark plan to save his people. He resents Torrin's association with Sethis and insists that the secondborn prince is not the true heir the Vey require.
Vendurante: A surviving Vey who restrains Thalmos's anger, recognizes Torrin as his lord, and leads him into the hidden chambers beneath Slyphash.
Melisandre: A red-haired Vey survivor who greets Torrin with both hope and distrust after believing that her small group was all that remained of their people.
Enarja Thol: A surviving Vey stationed in the hidden passages below Slyphash. Torrin remembers her presence during an earlier journey through the Chained Fortress.
Phelan Rote: A surviving Vey using his mental power to sustain the orb that siphons light from the dragons imprisoned beneath Slyphash.
Gods and Religion
Aran Melosis: The fallen swamp god whose death leaves the Harbingers to decide the fate of the souls trapped within his willow. His five-bladed amulet connects Normandy to Angela Thedon.
Angela Thedon: A powerful being contacted through Aran Melosis's sending stone. She knows that Whisper and Ernan are needed to open the Dios Ostium and threatens to send Mathias against the Harbingers.
Sethis: The divine figure formerly followed by Torrin and the exiled Vey. Thalmos reacts with anger when Torrin speaks her name, while the survivors believe their hidden work may help bring her back.
Organizations and Societies
Harbingers of Light: Free the Lythans from the willow, investigate Slyphash, survive Mathias's attack, and make first contact with the surviving Vey.
The Vey: Torrin's nearly forgotten people. A small group survives within Slyphash and siphons light from imprisoned dragons while pursuing a plan they believe can restore their people.
Lythans: The swamp-dwelling barbarians whose souls were held by the willow. Those whose bodies remain viable return fully to life and follow Bjorn toward Slyphash under the name of Skjold.
The Chain: Draxus Cale's expanding power. Angela claims that Draxus grows stronger with every new link and that his Chained City lies beyond the reach of her lesser creatures.
Creatures and Nature
The Whispering One's Willow: The immense tree that contains mortal souls and an older forgotten presence. Helena frees the souls, causing the willow to wither into a pale monument and lifting the plague from the swamp.
Captive Dragons: Two enormous dragons chained beneath Slyphash. The surviving Vey drain their light through a crystal while disease and corruption spread across the chamber below them.
Shrikes: Fast winged mounts used by the Harbingers to escape the collapsing willow, scout Slyphash, and travel between the liberated Lythans and the ruined stronghold.
Items and Technology
Five-Bladed Amulet: Aran Melosis's steel medallion, identified as a sending stone connected to Angela Thedon. It shatters when she discovers Normandy's deception.
All-Blade Spear: A spear with a handle resembling a great tree, recovered from the remains of the willow. It can function as a weapon with exceptional reach or join Bjorn's All-Blade to strengthen it.
Veyan Orb: A great sphere of swirling Veyan light hidden beneath Slyphash. Phelan Rote sustains it while the imprisoned dragons' power flows into it.
White Crystal: A crystal suspended above the Veyan orb that channels light from the captive dragons into the device.
Magic and Cosmology
Liberation of the Willow's Souls: Helena pulls the trapped mortal spirits from the tree and returns them to their bodies. Those too damaged to survive die, while the others regain their lives and the swamp begins to heal.
Forgotten Veyan Memory: An ancient presence buried within the willow contains knowledge capable of activating the Veyan device in the Golden City. Helena sacrifices access to those memories when she frees the mortal souls.
Supernatural Darkness: A thick darkness surrounding Slyphash that suppresses ordinary and magical sight. One of the surviving Vey can force it back, but does not appear to be its source.
Dragon-Light Siphoning: The hidden process beneath Slyphash that drains power from two chained dragons through a white crystal and gathers it within a Veyan orb.
Locations and Realms
Plague Swamps: The diseased wetlands surrounding the willow and Slyphash. The fog and sickness begin to dissipate after Helena frees the souls trapped within the tree.
Slyphash: A ruined stronghold built into a massive angled rock above the swamp. Its keep shelters the surviving Vey and conceals dragons, black glints, and a light-siphoning chamber deep below.
Golden City: The location of a dormant Veyan device that could have been activated through the forgotten memories within the willow.
Dios Ostium: The sealed Door of God that Angela claims can be opened only through Whisper and Ernan together.
Chained City: Draxus Cale's inland stronghold. Angela claims that neither her simulacrum nor the Dredged can reach it effectively.
History and Lore
End of the Plague: Helena rejects the opportunity to recover ancient Veyan knowledge and instead frees the willow's mortal souls, restoring the surviving Lythans and cleansing the surrounding swamp.
Return of Skjold: Bjorn offers the liberated Lythans unity without a traditional chief. The survivors recognize Skjold as the pathblazer, uniter, and barbarian who can draw the clans together.
Survival of the Vey: Torrin discovers that at least six members of his ancient people remain within Slyphash. They remember him as the secondborn prince and have turned to increasingly dangerous methods to preserve their civilization.
