Episode 25: Onward to the Unknown | Roll Seekers | Light of Tyve Campaign, Episode 25

Episode 25 Glossary

Characters

  • Ilk: Keeper of the Black Worm traveling in the lowest hold of the Maelstrodomus. He tells Torrin that the story of his warhammer remains unwritten and that the Worm can restore lost memories at a dangerous cost.

  • Queen of Dusk: Mysterious woman who joins Mathias in Vyr's vision. She says she has not heard the name Sethis in a very long time and warns Vyr about the hunger attached to her power.

  • Ilferan Beach Shaman: Young woman marked with blue tattoos who initially appears concerned for the visitors, later escapes the island with them, and has not yet given her name.

  • Ilferan Chieftain: Elder who oversees the sacrifice ritual, throws Bjorn's soul-filled pearl into the cavern pool, and gives his life while asking the Dredged to spare his people.

  • Ilferan Ritual Shaman: Elder spellcaster who activates the obelisks, calls upon the Dredged, and prays to the Tangled One after the ritual collapses.

  • Mathias Ephelthine: Ancient voice seeking Normandy's passage through the Dios Ostium. He participates in Vyr's vision and apparently prevents the Dredged from consuming Normandy.

  • Normandy Borthal: Uses Mage Hand to recover the black pearl immediately before the Dredged can reach it, then survives the creature's attempt to drain him when another power intervenes.

  • Bjorn: Recognizes the islanders as a lost seafaring barbarian people and becomes the unwilling focus of their ritual when his darkness is drawn into a black pearl.

Gods and Religion

  • The Tangled One: Sea power worshipped by the Ilferans. The islanders beg her forgiveness as the Dredged rises and the village is overtaken by supernatural weather.

  • Sethis: Ancient name spoken during Vyr's vision. The Queen of Dusk says she has not heard it in a very long time but does not explicitly confirm that it belongs to her.

  • The Black Worm: Eater of dreams described by Ilk as the darkness within the mind and a presence that can return memories while taking more than a petitioner intends.

  • Callus: Ancient god and man of tangible dreams whom Ilk identifies as a great being. The Black Worm inhabits the places Callus does not tread.

  • Ithelion: Broken source of light whose falling strands restore the Harbingers' boons and continue gathering inside Helena's vial.

Organizations and Societies

  • Harbingers of Light: Divert from the route to Galdemol to investigate the lost island, disrupt the Ilferan sacrifice, and escape with one of the island's shamans.

  • Ilferans: Ancient seafaring barbarian clan thought lost to history. Their isolated village protects the island through sacrifices to the Dredged.

  • Dread Stalkers: Pirates operating the Maelstrodomus. Their sailors warn against approaching Ilf and later recover the fleeing Harbingers from the water.

Creatures and Nature

  • The Dredged: Smooth, gray, web-handed humanoid summoned from a deep cavern pool. It drains darkness or soul from its victims, kills the Ilferan chieftain, and pursues the departing dinghy until a reef stops it.

  • Supernatural Monsoon: Sudden storm that forms over Ilf after the ritual fails, bringing violent wind, lightning, cold, spreading barnacles, and reanimated sea life.

  • Ilferan Reef: Submerged barrier surrounding the island's approach. The Harbingers' dinghy clears it, but the pursuing Dredged cannot pass.

  • Luring Song: Enchantment heard throughout the altered village that attempts to draw the Harbingers back toward the cavern.

Items and Technology

  • Bjorn's Black Pearl: Pearl selected from a clam at the island's shore and used as the focus of the Ilferan ritual. It leaves the island containing a portion of Bjorn's darkness or soul.

  • Green Ritual Obelisks: Four sharpened structures made from the same iridescent material seen in the Shattered Isles. They immobilize Bjorn and channel his darkness into the pearl until the Harbingers destroy them.

  • Helena's Vial: Vessel refilled with falling Ithelion light. Near the island, its radiance allows the Harbingers to cast light through objects they touch.

  • Maelstrodomus: Velpan prototype carrying the party north toward Galdemol. It remains offshore while the Harbingers explore Ilf and becomes their refuge after the escape.

  • Torrin's Warhammer: Weapon whose deeper history Ilk cannot read because its story appears veiled, lost, or not yet written.

Magic and Cosmology

  • Soul Siphoning: Ilferan ritual that pulls Bjorn's darkness from his mouth and seals it within the black pearl, leaving an unresolved division within him.

  • Light Conduction: Temporary effect surrounding Helena's vial that lets nearby companions place magical light into seaweed, oars, and the dinghy.

  • Dream Reading: Ilk's practice of reading stories carried by objects and using the Black Worm to recover memories buried within a mind.

  • The Hunger: Dangerous appetite associated with Vyr's growing power. The Queen of Dusk and Mathias warn that ignoring it could cause Vyr to turn against the group.

  • Divided Soul: The chieftain's death releases a white specter that splits before vanishing, suggesting that the Dredged can divide more than a victim's physical life.

Locations and Realms

  • Lost Isle of Ilf: Fogbound island northeast of the Maelstrodomus's route, absent from some navigational charts and surrounded by stories that visitors never return.

  • Ilferan Village: Settlement of roughly one to two hundred people built around a cavern entrance in the island's central jungle.

  • Sacrificial Cavern: Deep chamber containing the chieftain's seat, four ritual obelisks, and a blue pool connected to the sea far below.

  • Galdemol: Great vortex and breakwall leading into the Vented Gulf. It remains the Maelstrodomus's intended destination after the detour.

  • Land of Dreams: Realm of living, tangible dreams from which Ilk says he has traveled on a one-way journey.

History and Lore

  • Loss of the Ilferans: The seafaring clan survives on Ilf despite having passed into legend among other barbarians, but its isolation has become bound to ritual sacrifice.

  • Island Warning: Maelstrodomus engineers say every visitor to the fogbound island disappears, a story substantiated by the Ilferans' sacrificial custom.

  • Mathias's Bargain: Mathias wants Normandy to cross the Dio Ostium and has offered Bjorn limitless power and resources for his people if the group allows it.

  • Ilk's Journey: Ilk claims to have crossed from a distant land of dreams because the stars shine around Torrin and says the Harbingers' stories will fuel his own journey.
