Valence Avarith: Torin's father and a leader of the Vey. In Torin's childhood memory, Valence prepares to carry a sacred spear against the dragons and promises to return from the War of Fang and Fire.
Torin: Remembers standing before the Ithelion as a child and learning that his father intended to end the war with the dragons. In the present, his compass continues to point southwest beyond the known map.
Mathias Ephelthine: Approaches the Harbingers at Slyphash and claims that the Tangled One controls him through an amulet. He helps destroy Aran Melosis while negotiating for the Harbingers' protection and a future attack upon the Tangled One.
Bjorn: Rejects Mathias's proposal to purge Aran Melosis's worshippers. He turns the Lycans away from the swamp god, then chooses to return Aran Melosis to natural balance through the final strike.
Ilk: Warns the Harbingers that passing through Keph's damaged gate may prevent them from returning. He begins working to repair the portal after the group chooses to remain.
Nixon: Travels with the Harbingers and the two Blood Sorcerers after submitting to Belgor'Vrack. His growing hunger for blood and power remains a concern.
Snake Eye: Leads the pirates escorting the refugees from Slyphash and helps organize their defense against Aran Melosis.
Aran Melosis: An ascended swamp god attempting to reconstitute himself after an earlier defeat. He promises undeath to the Lycans and draws strength from their worship until Bjorn returns him to balance as a Nas Silver tree.
Solaris: The God of Light whom Valence identifies as the source of the Ithelion and the creator of the Vey.
The Tangled One: The ascended power controlling Mathias through an ancient amulet. She sends the Charybden against Keph and surrounds the keep with unnatural rain and fog.
Harbingers of Light: Rescue the Slyphash refugees, refuse Mathias's proposed purge, overcome Aran Melosis, and remain at Keph to confront the Tangled One.
The Vey: A people created in the image of Solaris's light. Valence believes their legacy is to end the War of Fang and Fire and lead the world toward something better.
Lycans: The gaunt, swamp-dwelling barbarians rescued from Slyphash. Aran Melosis tries to reclaim them, but they reject him after Bjorn invokes their ancestors and offers a different path.
Pirates: Escort the refugees through the Plague Swamps, construct a defensive bulwark, and help fight Aran Melosis before taking the Lycans' children to the Twilight Temple.
Blood Sorcerers: Arthas and Aeris accompany Nixon and the Harbingers. They assist Nixon's magic but remain interested in the power carried by blood, souls, and the dragon egg.
Charybden: An enormous, eight-tentacled creature dwelling in the reservoir beneath Keph. It kills a Varian Serpent and attacks the Harbingers as they move between the portal and the keep.
Dragon Egg: The single living egg recovered from the tower at Slyphash. It may remain dormant for centuries unless something triggers it to hatch.
Nas Silver Tree: A luminous tree connected simultaneously to a new growth and a larger tree beyond Tyve. Aran Melosis becomes one when Bjorn restores his spirit to natural balance.
Varian Serpent: A massive serpent killed and mangled by the Charybden beneath Keph.
Helvaegan: Bjorn's all-blade. When joined correctly with its spear component, the weapon gains the reach of a pike while retaining its axe form.
Ix Crystal: Vyr's soul-bearing crystal. It offers to release Acuras in exchange for permanently containing Aran Melosis, but Vyr refuses.
Mathias's Amulet: The ancient object worn by the Tangled One that binds Mathias to her service and suppresses his power. Mathias asks the Harbingers to break it.
The Tear: The portal network used to evacuate the Slyphash refugees. The gate at Keph cracks after the Harbingers choose not to leave through it.
Collective Belief: The worship of the Lycans sustains Aran Melosis as a god. Their decision to reject him and rally around Bjorn strips away the belief he needs to dominate them.
Divine Ascension: Mathias explains that fear and worship raised the Tangled One and similar beings beyond mortality. Their power depends partly upon the people who believe in them.
Natural Balance: A divine or druidic alternative to destroying Aran Melosis or condemning him to the Hollow Void. Bjorn's choice disperses the god's life through the land as a Nas Silver tree.
Ithelion: A vast pillar of divine light attributed to Solaris. Valence brings the young Torin before it to explain the origin and legacy of the Vey.
Keph: The keep preparing for the Chain's arrival. The Tangled One surrounds it with unnatural rain and fog while the Charybden attacks from the reservoir below.
Keph Reservoir: The deep body of water beneath the keep where the Charybden dwells and where the dead Varian Serpent is discovered.
Plague Swamps: The swamp surrounding Slyphash. Aran Melosis attempts to reclaim the Lycans there before his transformation renews part of the land.
Slyphash: A ruined stronghold connected to Keph through the Tear. The Harbingers recover a dragon egg there and evacuate its remaining refugees.
Twilight Temple: The sanctuary selected for the Lycans' children and most of the pirates after their evacuation.
Transformation of Aran Melosis: Bjorn refuses both genocide and eternal punishment, returning the fallen swamp god to balance as a Nas Silver tree that restores the surrounding land.
War of Fang and Fire: The ancient war between the Vey and the dragons. Valence tells the young Torin that he will carry a sacred spear across the mountains and end the conflict by any means necessary.
