Episode 33: Further Inland | Roll Seekers | Light of Tyve Campaign, Episode 33

Episode 33 Glossary

Characters

  • Elendra Elutharis: Luminous Evenari warrior who finds the Harbingers on the road, opens a passage into Venfallas, and later joins them as a guide. Outside the sanctuary, she becomes ethereal in daylight and cannot offer the full strength of her blade.

  • Ylvis Denell Elutharis: Chief of the Evenari and Elendra's father. He explains his people's refuge, their ancient war with the Blood Keepers, and what he knows of Acuras.

  • Acuras: Ageless Blood Keeper who gains power through sanguine arts. Torrin remembers that the Vey once imprisoned him, while Ylvis says he came from beyond Tyve and fears Mother Argalus.

  • Mother Ethel: Elderly benefactor and leader of Anathema. She governs a village protected by Keph but burdened by its demand for tribute.

  • Torrin: His compass confirms the route toward Dragdah, his dream renews a mysterious command to guide his people, and his revealed identity causes the Evenari council to bow.

  • Draxus and Zyltrix: Absent figures accused of betraying the conspirators gathered in the episode's final scene.

Gods and Religion

  • Sethis's Possible Call: The voice in Torrin's dream resembles the power that has previously spoken through his divine experiences, but the episode does not explicitly identify it. It asks whether Torrin remembers himself and orders him to guide their people with light.

  • Great Mother of the Evenari: Power represented by three speakers acting as maiden, mother, and crone. Through them, the Harbingers receive three answers about their path.

  • Mother Argalus: Ancient entity feared by Acuras and connected to the watching scarecrow. The Evenari describe her kind as primal emotions that were corrupted, sealed away, and later summoned by mortals.

  • Ithelion: Divine power whose restoration is beyond the triune speakers' vision. They explain that gods do not intervene in the affairs of gods.

  • Blood Church of Anathema: Local rite in which worshippers offer a young woman's blood while chanting promises of beauty, youth, and supernatural gifts.

Organizations and Societies

  • Evenari: Hidden people preserved within Venfallas after love saved them from annihilation. Their sanctuary grants safety and longevity, but confines them and leaves them vulnerable in the mortal world.

  • Blood Sorcerers of Keph: Sanguine rulers who protect tribute villages from the Chain while taking people and blood in return. Their white-clad riders approach Anathema after its ritual begins.

  • Blood Keepers: Name Ylvis uses for the enemies his people have fought throughout his memory, including Acuras and his kind.

  • Anathema: Poor community of roughly one hundred people governed by Mother Ethel and caught between the threat of the Chain and the tribute demanded by Keph.

  • Unnamed Conspiracy: Figures assembled around a throne of fish bones, weeds, and tangles. They intend to open a door, oppose Draxus and Zyltrix, and manipulate others through a web of deception.

Creatures and Nature

  • Golden Dream Tree: Radiant tree on the plateau in Torrin's dream. Its light stands between red illumination, the fractured statues, and darkness advancing from the Chained City.

  • Silver Trees of Venfallas: Luminous forest growth that drips silver radiance beneath an artificial night sky and conceals the Evenari settlement.

  • Darkness Beyond the Fairy Lights: Dangerous region outside Venfallas's illuminated paths. Elendra warns the visitors not to stray beyond the guiding lights.

  • Faceless Webbed Creature: Unidentified being caressed by the enthroned woman during the final gathering, adding to the chamber's aquatic and tangled imagery.

Items and Technology

  • Torrin's Compass: Supernatural compass that points toward the glacier containing Dragdah and confirms the Harbingers' chosen route.

  • Watching Scarecrow: Effigy at a three-way fork that Torrin associates with Mother Argalus. Although the party burns it, no remains are present the next morning.

  • Crystallic Key of Dio Ostium: Original key shattered into nine pieces by the greatest Veyan king. Reassembling it may open the ancient gate.

  • Shadow Key: Second means of opening Dio Ostium, forged through an act of black betrayal and hidden within the shadows.

  • Elendra's Moonlit Blade: Pale weapon carried by Elendra when she enters the Harbingers' camp and opens the path into Venfallas.

  • Pale Blade, Crescent Edge, and Nightbringer: Three magical longswords given to the Harbingers by the Evenari council. Each can illuminate itself and cast bright moonlike light across the surrounding darkness.

Magic and Cosmology

  • Venfallas: Hidden sanctuary reached when Elendra cuts through the veil between trees. It has its own starry sky, purple moonlight, silver forest, and altered relationship with time and mortality.

  • Three Questions: Divinatory audience granted by the maiden, mother, and crone. Their answers concern Dio Ostium, Ithelion, and resistance to Mother Argalus.

  • Lifeless Blood: Substance invoked in Anathema's ritual as the price for beauty, youth, and gifts. Its precise nature is not yet explained.

  • Ancient Emotions: Beings said to have entered the world as primal emotions before corruption changed them. They were sealed on Ardhas beyond the edge, then called back by mortals.

  • Evenari Daylight Ethereality: Condition that makes Elendra insubstantial outside Venfallas during daylight, limiting her ability to interact with and defend the party.

  • Valdhe the False Moon: Apparent moon suspended over Venfallas, contributing to the realm's perpetual twilight and illusory sky.

Locations and Realms

  • Anathema: Tribute village along the traveled road toward Tch'nev. Its apparent safety from the Chain depends upon submission to Keph.

  • Venfallas: Concealed homeland of the Evenari, also described as part of the Shadowlands. Its safety ends beyond the illuminated paths and the veil surrounding it.

  • Dragdah: Ancient city buried beneath a glacier on the Veng'namar Plateau. The Harbingers hope its ancestral knowledge can help them recover Helena.

  • Veng'namar Plateau: Frigid highland containing Dragdah and connected to the Harbingers' dangerous pilgrimage inland.

  • Tch'nev: Major destination on the route toward the plateau.

  • Ilanar: Settlement below the plateau where Elendra expects the party can obtain equipment for the extreme cold.

  • Dio Ostium: Ancient Veyan gate that once separated highborn and lowborn peoples. Opening it requires either the divided Crystallic key or a second key hidden in shadow.

  • Ardhas: Realm beyond the edge where Mother Argalus and other corrupted emotional powers were once sealed.

History and Lore

  • Fall of Acuras's Prison: Torrin remembers that the Vey imprisoned Acuras thousands of years ago. The Blood Keeper escaped when that prison collapsed.

  • Salvation of the Evenari: Ylvis says love prevented his people's destruction and created their enduring refuge, but that salvation also became a form of confinement.

  • War with the Blood Keepers: The Evenari have opposed Acuras's people for longer than Ylvis can meaningfully measure.

  • Division of the Vey: Dio Ostium did more than defend the Vey from external enemies. It marked an internal separation between highborn and lowborn peoples.

  • Shattering of the Key: The greatest Veyan king broke the Crystallic key into nine segments, leaving the ancient gate sealed.

  • Keph's Tribute System: Blood Sorcerers shelter settlements from the Chain and extract people or blood in exchange, making protection another form of predation.
