Episode 01: Welcome to Tyve | Roll Seekers | Light of Tyve Campaign, Episode 01

Episode 01 Glossary

Characters

  • Helena: A Venari traveler guided toward Tyve by a compass and a distant light. She survives the Maelstrom, searches for Vyr's missing uncle, and interprets helping Aggie as the first step in her own redemption.

  • Vyr: Helena's Numthara companion. She helps steer the stolen ship through the Maelstrom, reads the ancient inscription that opens the hidden chamber, and mourns her uncle after finding his abandoned cloak and jewelry.

  • Whisper: A young thief traveling with Ernan and Bjorn. He seeks enough money to free his grandmother Graham from the Reef, opens the locked box aboard the wrecked ship, and recovers the artifacts marked by a chained wolf.

  • Ernan: A musician, storyteller, and thief traveling with Whisper. He initially prioritizes their time-sensitive job in Andros but agrees to delay it so that Aggie's family can be buried.

  • Bjorn: A barbarian hired as muscle by Whisper and Ernan. His reverence for ancestors leads him to abandon the Andros job and help Aggie fulfill her family's burial rite.

  • Normandy Borthal: A reclusive scholar living with Aggie in the wilderness. He reads the script upon the artifact's box, takes possession of the metal fragment, and recognizes the chained-wolf symbol as connected to a dangerous mainland cult.

  • Aggie: A fourteen-year-old runaway living under Normandy's protection. She asks the group to help bury her dead family at Ephthalis during the Zarexian Eclipse.

  • Rue: The temporary name given to an amnesiac, blue-skinned warrior who materializes from the Void when the artifact box is opened. His presence restores the chamber's lost contents, allows nearby companions to see in darkness, and connects him to the metal fragment.

  • Captain Silas: A Gavran militia officer who threatens Whisper with imprisonment in the drowned cell. Later that night, he discovers and touches the Scepter of Astarius.

  • Zyltrix: An ancient archmage who removes an Ithelion shard from Tyve's heart and commands Argylus and Calyx to seal the mountain door behind his expedition.

Gods and Religion

  • Solaris: A dead and buried god who returns to Nabell in a primordial eruption of light. Solaris ends the conflict among the gods, shatters Tyve, and creates a people in the image of divine light.

  • Ordos: The God of Magic whose reincarnation Zyltrix is said to embody.

  • Calyx: A powerful being commanded by Zyltrix to alter the fate of the mountain door so that it can never open. The heroes of Garifond later defeat the same entity.

  • Burial of the Drowned: A coastal rite in which the dead are returned to the sea. Normandy performs a prayer and offering in this tradition after Vyr believes her uncle has died.

Organizations and Societies

  • The Vey: A people created through Solaris's divine light. The ancient chamber and its artifact appear connected to their last hope.

  • Cult of the Iron Chain: A powerful mainland religion identified by a wolf surrounded or consumed by chains. Normandy says its followers persecute and kill those who reject their path.

  • Gavran Militia: The armored patrol serving Gavra. Captain Silas leads six militia members along the coast, questions Whisper, and later discovers the Scepter of Astarius.

  • Venari: Helena's people, recognizable by their elven appearance. Their kind is unfamiliar and unwelcome within Tyve's fearful culture.

  • Numthara: Vyr and her uncle's people, whose appearance resembles that of drow. Vyr conceals her features after learning how Tyve treats outsiders.

  • Pickers: Scavengers who search Tyve's beaches for valuables carried ashore by shipwrecks. Their arrival forces the group to leave the coast.

Creatures and Nature

  • Anglark: A six-foot aquatic predator with a sharklike body, a spiked tail, and barbs along its head. It hunts Whisper and Bjorn around the wrecked ship.

  • Unknown Sea Presence: A figure with grasping hands and hair resembling seaweed or snakes. It saves Helena and Vyr from drowning, although Helena senses that the rescue may carry a future cost.

  • Vented Sea: The warm ocean surrounding Tyve. Lava aquifers beneath the water create a tropical ecosystem despite the island's cold climate.

Items and Technology

  • Scepter of Astarius: A golden rod crowned with a green stone and left upon Tyve's coast by the leader of seven black knights. Captain Silas activates it at the episode's end.

  • Shard of the Ithelion: A small but powerful fragment removed from the heart of Tyve by Zyltrix's expedition and sealed beyond an immense mountain door.

  • Crystallic Fragment: A curved piece of metal found within the hidden chamber. A vision connects it to a crystalline crown called the Crystallic, while touching it fills Rue with heat and the command to find more.

  • Helena's Compass: A compass that draws Helena toward Tyve and the distant light beyond its mountains, even as another force attempts to turn her away from the Maelstrom.

  • Helena's Vial: A vessel filled with swirling darkness that gains a measure of light when Helena's companions act selflessly.

  • Rue's Mechanical Compass: A small mechanical sphere containing a point of light. When Rue opens it at camp, it points sharply northwest.

  • Whisper's Key: A key worn around Whisper's neck. Although it does not appear shaped for the lock, it opens the hidden black box aboard the wrecked ship.

  • Iron Chain Dagger and Signet Ring: A ceremonial blade and ring recovered from the ship. Both bear the symbol of a wolf bound or consumed by iron chains.

  • Glint: Tyve's light-bearing currency and a reputed defense against the island's plague. Rue possesses a piece of exceptionally pure glint with no visible bedrock or imperfection.

Magic and Cosmology

  • Maelstrom of Tyve: The impassable wall of storm, fog, and water surrounding the island. It destroys Helena's ship after her compass leads the travelers through it.

  • Darkness Born of Light: A recurring paradox within Tyve's history. The hidden inscription describes the sacred shard as pure white light that breathes darkness, while Tyve's people warn that the island's darkness itself was born from light.

  • The Void: The realm from which Rue appears when Normandy opens the artifact box. Rue remains partially ethereal as he struggles to become fully present within the material world.

  • Restored Chamber: A magical transformation triggered by Rue's arrival. An empty stone room becomes a furnished refuge filled with crystalline furniture and strange devices, then becomes bare again when Rue touches the fragment.

  • Shared Darkvision: An ability Rue manifests instinctively, allowing three nearby companions to see through darkness in shades of gray.

  • Tyve's Plague: An incurable sickness said to hollow its victims from within until only darkness remains. Glint is believed to repel it, and Scarsden has reportedly avoided a case for two decades.

Locations and Realms

  • Tyve: A shattered island surrounded by the Maelstrom and covered by cold, overcast skies. Its people regard it as both their home and a prison from which no one escapes.

  • Heart of Tyve: The central region from which Zyltrix's expedition removes a fragment of the Ithelion. It lies beyond Tyve's seemingly impassable mountains.

  • Hidden Shore Chamber: An ancient room beneath the waterfall cliffs, exposed when Helena and Vyr's ship crashes into the coast. It contains the artifact box and the fragment connected to Rue.

  • Scarsden: The cold hinterland containing the coast, forests, and settlements where the episode begins. Its people have not suffered a recorded case of Tyve's plague for two decades.

  • Gavra: The realm governed by Marquis Selinda Cassiandras and patrolled by Captain Silas's militia.

  • Andros: A port city where Whisper and Ernan are expected to complete a time-sensitive theft for their criminal contacts.

  • Ephthalis: A sacred stone outcropping and waterfall grove once revered by Scarsden's barbarian clans. Aggie must bury her family there during the Zarexian Eclipse.

  • The Reef: A prison whose lowest cell floods with the tide. Whisper's grandmother Graham is being moved steadily toward that drowned cell.

  • Garafon: The distant kingdom where the previous campaign ends with Calyx's defeat and the confrontation with the Green Knight.

History and Lore

  • Shattering of Tyve: Solaris's return to Nabell ends the war among the gods but breaks Tyve beneath an eruption of primordial light.

  • Sealing of the Mountain Door: Zyltrix removes an Ithelion shard from Tyve's heart and compels Argylus and Calyx to seal the passage so that no one can reclaim it.

  • Arrival of the Seven Black Knights: Three years before the present, seven dying knights reach Tyve's coast in search of the island's central light. Their bodies vanish, leaving only the Scepter of Astarius.

  • Sarexian Eclipse: A rare eclipse occurring once every fifty years. Aggie's family requires burial during the eclipse, and Helena reveals that she was born beneath it.
