Characters
Bjorn: Completes the journey once required of Norn's chiefs. He rejects the judgment of the three sisters, takes Skjold's Helm, and insists that the surviving barbarians must build something beyond the old ways.
Skjold the Anvil: The legendary barbarian remembered as Norn's greatest chief and blacksmith. His corpse is revealed within the summit tree after lightning strikes it, allowing Bjorn to recover his horned helm.
Magna Neva: Appears as a vision that draws Bjorn toward the chief's path before fading as he enters the mountains.
Torrin: Meets another surviving Vey within the Shining Star. His book, compass, and Crystallic reveal pieces of his forgotten royal identity to the Arbiter of Succession.
Arbiter of Succession: An elderly Vey sustained far beyond his expected life by the Shining Star's failing succession engine. He recognizes Torrin, reveals the city's purpose, and warns him about Sethis and the fallen Vey.
Alphil: A guard of the Shining Star who encounters the Harbingers after they open the concealed gate. He fears their shrikes until learning that the Watchers gave the creatures to them.
Gods and Religion
The Maiden, Mother, and Crone: Three ancestral powers who judge Bjorn during the chief's journey. Their refusal to name him worthy forces him to confront whether he seeks authority, service, or a new path for his people.
Sethis: A divine figure associated with Torrin and the Vey. The Arbiter warns Torrin not to trust her but cannot explain further before the Shining Star is concealed.
Organizations and Societies
Harbingers of Light: Investigate Vilk, retreat from the Chain's industrial forces, discover the Shining Star, and awaken its dormant portal through Torrin's Crystallic.
The Chain: Operates the industrial city of Vilk through machinery, armored servants, and chained laborers. Its forces harvest the Staring Woods to feed the city's furnaces.
The Vey: Torrin's forgotten people. The Shining Star preserves a surviving Veyan community, while the Arbiter warns that other Vey followed a true dark path.
The Arcanium: A secret organization with multiple hidden outposts across Tyve. The Shining Star and its Arbiter are connected to its preservation of ancient knowledge.
Nornians: Bjorn's former clan and the people whose chiefs once completed the mountain path. Bjorn concludes that their traditions must change if their surviving culture is to endure.
Creatures and Nature
Shrikes: Fast winged mounts bestowed upon the Harbingers by the Watchers. They carry the group to Vilk and the Staring Woods but remain outside the Shining Star when danger approaches.
Watchers: Mysterious beings whose trial granted the Harbingers their shrikes. The guards of the Shining Star react to their name and creatures with immediate fear.
Skjold's Tree: An ancient tree growing from the summit of the chief's path. Lightning splits it open and reveals Skjold's preserved corpse within its trunk.
Items and Technology
Skjold's Helm: A horned ancestral helm recovered from Skjold's corpse. Bjorn claims it as a symbol through which the surviving barbarians may define a new future.
Crystallic: Torrin's partially restored artifact. It frightens the Arbiter, awakens the Shining Star's portal, and gives Torrin visions of the Crystallic being shattered and of a collapsing Veyan city.
Soul-Scripted Book: Torrin's book of private messages and developing magic. The Arbiter identifies its crest as belonging to a Veyan lord or royal.
Torrin's Compass: A Veyan object guiding Torrin toward his people. The Arbiter nearly recovers an important memory while examining it but cannot reach the answer.
Succession Engine: A Veyan machine composed of hundreds of empty pods. It stores memories and is intended to create a new Arbiter of Succession whenever the previous one dies.
Shrike Whistle: A whistle carried by Bjorn that can summon the Harbingers' shrikes from a distance.
Magic and Cosmology
Veyan Succession: A preservation process that siphons an arbiter's memories and life across fifteen cycles before remaking another Vey within the succession engine. The current cycle has failed to end.
The Untelling: The ancient erasure of Veyan civilization and memory. The Arbiter believes the succession engine was one of several contingencies created while the Vey struggled to prevent it.
Shining Star Illusion: A Veyan mirage powerful enough to imitate solid matter and replace the successionarium, its portal, and the Arbiter with an apparently seamless wall.
Portal Network: A system of rune-marked gateways connecting distant locations. The Crystallic reactivates the Shining Star's dormant link and illuminates the rune of the Twilight Temple.
Locations and Realms
Chief's Path: The freezing mountain route traditionally completed by Norn's chiefs. Its trials lead Bjorn to Skjold's monument and force him to redefine the purpose of barbarian leadership.
Vilk: A vast industrial city controlled by the Chain. Its furnaces, machinery, chained laborers, and armored servants are consuming the nearby forest.
Staring Woods: An immense western forest threatened by Vilk's harvesting machines. A magically concealed entrance within it leads to the Shining Star.
The Shining Star: A hidden Veyan city of golden towers, waterfalls, gardens, schools, and libraries. It shelters a surviving community and houses the failing succession engine.
Sheared Peaks: The mountain range crossed by Bjorn during the chief's journey. Its severe cold, narrow paths, and six-hundred-foot climb nearly kill him.
Twilight Temple: The destination activated through the Shining Star's portal after Torrin touches the gateway with the Crystallic.
History and Lore
Bjorn's Chief's Journey: Bjorn completes the ordeal he postponed while ruling Norn, but its central revelation is that the surviving barbarians no longer need the old definition of a chief.
Legacy of Skjold: Skjold is remembered as the greatest of Norn's chiefs, yet his recovered helm becomes an open symbol whose future meaning Bjorn must determine.
Veyan Preservation: The Shining Star's people used memory, magic, and constructed bodies to preserve fragments of their civilization after the Untelling.
Fallen Vey: Other surviving Vey allegedly followed a true dark path. The Arbiter claims they will pursue Torrin and take everything from him.
