Characters
Whisper: Relives his arrival in Gavra as an infant and a childhood encounter with Silas. In the present, his extracted darkness becomes a hostile copy before returning to him.
Gram: Older woman who found infant Whisper on the eastern coast and chose to raise him rather than send him away with the Velpan Trading Company.
Father Patches: Priest of Eth who recognizes something unusual in the infant Whisper and offers Gram options for protecting him.
Lily: Childhood companion of Whisper among Madame Iris's household.
Tavros: Young Thieves Guild acolyte who recruits eight-year-old Whisper to distract a clothing merchant during a theft.
Captain Silas: Gavran officer who catches young Whisper during the theft and threatens to make him scream if they meet again.
Angelette Thadon / Aggie: Name revealed by the temple inscription as the Tangled One's true identity. A watery aspect speaks through Aggie's form while Aggie herself begins a deadly song aboard Lily's Song.
Normandy: States under a Zone of Truth that he found Aggie after her parents died of glister and cares for her as family. He offers the watery aspect a cloak made by Aggie.
Cecil: Zandra's celestial identity, revealed when her eyes flare with stars as she confronts Angelette aboard Lily's Song.
Mathias Ephelthine: Normandy's unseen companion and a member of the ancient Syphus Order. He cannot or will not explain Aggie's true nature.
Zyltrix: Leader blamed by Angelette for taking the Ithelion and abandoning those who crossed into Tyve with him.
Gods and Religion
The Tangled One: Sea goddess whose statue conceals an older passage. Her true-name puzzle, siren song, black water, and watery aspect dominate the route through the buried sanctuary.
Eth: Goddess of New Beginnings. Father Patches serves her church and considers taking infant Whisper into its care.
Ithelion: Separated divine light that Angelette says is dying. Its pieces must be restored before the curse can end.
Light of Piln: Great light identified by Angelette as something that must fall as part of restoring the Ithelion.
Shadow of the Moon: Counterpart that Angelette says must return while the separated light is made whole.
Organizations and Societies
Church of Eth: Institution where Gram seeks help for infant Whisper.
Thieves Guild: Gavran guild whose young acolytes use Whisper as a distraction during a clothing-store robbery.
Velpan Trading Company: Organization Father Patches considers using to send the infant to safety in the Isles. Normandy's captured records can also expose the company to the Marquis.
Syphus Order: Ancient expedition that crossed into Tyve under Zyltrix. Angelette describes its members as finding the light but being abandoned and imprisoned.
Ilferan: Peaceful, mystical seafaring clan whose designs may appear on the central obelisk beyond the caldera.
Veyan Empire: Torin's ancient civilization. He recognizes Gavra's obelisk as one of its central pillars.
Dread Stalkers: Pirate company aboard Lily's Song. Four members succumb to Angelette's song and jump into the sea.
Creatures and Nature
Whisper's Shadow Copy: Darkness extracted from Whisper and formed into a duplicate. It resists cold and ordinary weapons, draws strength from nearby shadow creatures, and is ultimately pulled back into him.
Deep Tentacled Creature: Vast bioluminescent presence beneath the black water. One tentacle attacks and freezes the bone bridge after Torin and Bjorn are rescued.
Nana: Vyr's bat companion. Vyr dispatches her with a note intended to guide Lily's Song to the party, but she reaches the ship after Angelette's song begins.
Items and Technology
Whisper's Key: Key already hanging around Whisper's neck when Gram finds him as an infant. Its origin remains unknown.
Pure-Glint Temple Crystal: Suspended crystal powering the extraction device. The company destroys it, and it collapses into dust.
Helena's Ithelion Vial: Pulls the shadow duplicate inward but also draws more darkness from the surrounding temple, briefly strengthening it.
Ancient-Warning Watch: Bjorn's watch accelerates near the danger below the bridge and slows after the tentacle retreats.
Tomorrow Doll: Doll recovered by Torin from the Arcanium. During the group's rest, he briefly senses someone sitting opposite him while he studies it.
Aggie-Made Cloak: Cloak Normandy gives to the watery aspect of Angelette as an offering to the drowning. It disappears into the pool and is no longer carried.
Velpan and Felrick Ledgers: Normandy confirms that the records in his possession can place both organizations under the Marquis's scrutiny.
Nana's Note: Message tied to Nana's foot showing Lily's Song and a pirate. It identifies where the company went but does not warn the crew about Aggie.
Magic and Cosmology
Darkness Extraction: Ancient device removes moral and magical darkness from a living subject, converting that darkness into a separate entity. Breaking the source allows the darkness to return.
Ithelion Attraction: Helena's light does not merely oppose the shadow copy. It draws the surrounding darkness toward itself, demonstrating a dangerous relationship between Tyve's light and shadow.
True-Name Passage: Speaking Angelette Thadon's name causes a black-marble bridge of interwoven skeletons to form across the water.
Siren Song: Supernatural song that charms travelers with personal visions and draws them toward the water.
Water Way Gate: Portal linking the Shattered Isles obelisk to Gavra. A traveler passes through seven days of sea distance instantly.
Veyan Destination Ring: Movable ring within Gavra's obelisk. One rune remains illuminated for the route just used, while the other destinations are dark.
Starlight Eruption: Cecil's eyes flare with stars before an explosion of starlight spreads across Lily's Song. Its effects are not yet shown.
Locations and Realms
Lower Temple: Layered sanctuary beneath the mine. The later statue of the Tangled One conceals an older tunnel and black-water complex.
Black-Water Cavern: Bone-filled chamber containing the true-name pedestal, the skeletal bridge, and the deep tentacled creature.
Waterfall Caldera: Open mountain basin surrounded by glaciers and falling water. Ancient stairs descend to a long wooden bridge and central rock pillar.
Ilferan Obelisk: Crystal-lined structure in the caldera whose pool contains Angelette's aspect and a way gate to Gavra.
Gavra Obelisk: Great pillar connected to Gavra's castle. Torin identifies it as part of the Veyan way-gate network.
Dio Ostium: Door said to lead to the Ithelion at the center of Tyve.
Piln: City holding the Light that Angelette says must fall.
Sequestered Sea: Waters where Lily's Song waits while the shore party explores the islands.
History and Lore
Whisper's Arrival: Gram finds Whisper on the eastern coast with no known family and a mysterious key, beginning his life among Gavra's poor and criminal communities.
Whisper and Silas: Their antagonistic history reaches back to Whisper's childhood, when Silas was already a captain and Whisper was assisting a guild theft.
Repurposed Sanctuary: The Tangled One's statue and religious layer were added after the extraction device, indicating that the temple originally served another power or purpose.
Debt to the Tangled One: Angelette asks Whisper and Ernan whether they have come to repay a debt, but does not explain what they owe.
Syphus Expedition: Zyltrix led Mathias and other travelers into Tyve in search of the Ithelion. Angelette says those left behind became more powerful and more tightly imprisoned.
Broken Ithelion: Removing the light from its place in time created a curse. Angelette warns that the dying separation will eventually expose the world to a horror beyond the sealed door.
Way-Gate Network: The Shattered Isles and Gavra obelisks are connected parts of a larger Veyan travel system with multiple unlit destinations.
Song aboard Lily's Song: Angelette's song compels four pirates to jump overboard before Cecil answers with celestial power.
