Characters
Ernan: Whisper's closest companion and presumed brother. He is revealed as a servant of the Chain who stole the Crystallic fragments and Piln's light, then chooses death rather than continue betraying the Harbingers.
Whisper: Refuses Ernan's offer to flee Tyve and insists that the Harbingers have become their family. His recovered memory exposes Ernan's betrayal at Piln before he watches his brother die resisting the Chain.
Bjorn: Meets Skjold and Magna Neva during his return from the chief's path. He accepts that the surviving barbarians may need him as a guide rather than a traditional chief.
Skjold the Anvil: Appears beside Bjorn's campfire and dismisses the grand legend built around his life. He describes himself as a pathfinder and charges Bjorn with continuing what the symbol of Skjold means.
Magna Neva: Joins Skjold at Bjorn's camp and explains that the sisters' judgment was intended to uncover his true desire. She warns that a second power is watching Bjorn's journey.
Zyltrix: Leader of the ancient expedition into Tyve. He entrusts the recovered light to Horatio, judges the others unworthy, and leaves the Siphon Order trapped behind the Dios Ostium.
Horatio: The only member of the Siphon Order whom Zyltrix judges worthy of the recovered light. He escapes the others' attack and carries it toward the eastern archipelagos.
Martha: Leader of Piln's Arcanium. She reveals that the Ithelion fragment is fading and proposes stealing it while sacrificing Piln's people to preserve the lighthouse.
Valence Avarith: Torrin's father. In a recovered memory, he seals the empty sarcophagus of Sethis and insists that her darkness must be forgotten.
Arbiter of Succession: Contacts Torrin after the Harbingers escape the Shining Star. He warns that the enemy is still coming and delivers an ambiguous warning about the scepter before the connection fails.
Gods and Religion
Sethis: The divine Shadow of Light whose empty sarcophagus lies beneath the Twilight Temple. Torrin remembers Valence sealing the chamber after Sethis was burned from existence.
Solaris: The divine source whom Torrin associates with the Ithelion and the Vey. Torrin believes preserving life may require reuniting the scattered light.
Shadow of Light: A title associated with Sethis and inscribed upon the sarcophagus sealed by Valence Avarith.
Organizations and Societies
Harbingers of Light: Escape the Shining Star, investigate two dark temple chambers, recover the truth about Piln, and are paralyzed when Ernan invokes the Chain.
The Chain: A supernatural order that binds its servants, suppresses resistance, and values every link beneath the whole. Its creed allows Ernan to seize control of the Harbingers before he turns its power against himself.
The Siphon Order: An ancient expeditionary group that enters Tyve with Zyltrix. Its members fracture after Zyltrix entrusts Horatio with the light taken from beyond the Dios Ostium.
Piln Arcanium: A secret organization studying the weakening light within Piln's lighthouse. Its leaders are prepared to destroy the city in an attempt to preserve light across the archipelagos.
Keepers of Piln: The civic order responsible for guarding Piln and its lighthouse. They remain unaware of the Arcanium's plan to steal the light and sacrifice the city.
Creatures and Nature
Shrikes: The Harbingers' winged mounts, left near the entrance to the Shining Star when the group escapes through the portal. Bjorn carries the whistle capable of recalling them.
Skjold's Summit Tree: The ancient tree that yields Skjold's body and helm. Magna Neva claims the tree has chosen Bjorn and that another presence is watching through that connection.
Items and Technology
Crystallic Fragments: Two pieces of the ancient artifact carried by Torrin during the earlier visit to Piln. Ernan steals both while the Chain's creed paralyzes the group.
Light Phylacteries: Vessels capable of holding fragments of divine or mortal light. Ernan uses his own phylactery to take Helena's light and the light of Piln.
Piln Light-Extraction Device: An Arcanium machine designed to drain light from living beings. Martha plans to use the population of Piln as fuel for the lighthouse after its divine fragment is removed.
Traeus Tablet: A rune-marked stone recovered from a dark chamber of the Twilight Temple. It names the legendary civilization pursued by the chamber's former scholar.
Skjold's Helm: The ancestral helm worn by Bjorn. Skjold tells him that its value lies in the meaning future barbarians give it rather than in the fame of its original owner.
The Scepter: An unidentified object mentioned in the Arbiter's broken warning to Torrin. He says Torrin must recover it but also calls it a trap.
Magic and Cosmology
Chain's Creed: A ritual declaration that allows Ernan to impose the Chain's bond upon those who hear it. Each line progressively paralyzes the Harbingers and reveals red bindings around them.
Memory Replacement: Magic used by Ernan to conceal the theft of Piln's light and replace the Harbingers' memories of the event. His apology to Whisper causes the original memory to return.
Death and the Chain: Ernan believes that only death can sever the Chain's supernatural bond. He burns himself alive to resist its command and free the paralyzed Harbingers.
Light of the Ithelion: The divine light carried by Horatio and later housed within Piln's lighthouse. Arcanium measurements show that it has weakened over five years.
Collective Light: The mortal light carried within living beings. Piln's Arcanium believes enough of it can temporarily replace the failing Ithelion fragment, though extracting it kills the vessels.
Locations and Realms
Dios Ostium: The Door of God sealed by Zyltrix and the Siphon Order after their expedition into Tyve's interior. Their attempt to remove pure light from beyond it causes the order's schism.
Twilight Temple: The sanctuary where the Harbingers investigate Traeus and Sethis, recover the memory of Piln, and witness Ernan's death.
Piln: A prosperous city built around a lighthouse containing a fragment of the Ithelion. Its people unknowingly face sacrifice under the Arcanium's contingency plan.
The Shining Star: The hidden Veyan city from which the Harbingers escape through the portal. Its Arbiter remains behind with the hostile Vey who found Torrin.
Traeus: A legendary city or civilization said to have been lost beneath the waves. A former Twilight Temple scholar believed repeated references proved it was more than a myth.
Chief's Path: The ancestral mountain route where Bjorn receives the guidance of Skjold and Magna Neva after completing the summit trial.
History and Lore
Schism of the Siphon Order: Zyltrix chooses Horatio to carry the light recovered beyond the Dios Ostium and abandons the other expeditionaries, who immediately turn against Horatio.
Betrayal at Piln: Ernan uses the Chain's power to paralyze the Harbingers, steal the Crystallic and divine light, and replace their memories of the event.
Ernan's Death: Ernan rejects the Chain's command, accepts that Whisper will not abandon the Harbingers, and burns himself to death so the bond will release them.
Sethis's Empty Tomb: Valence Avarith seals an empty sarcophagus as a forgotten prison for the remnants of Sethis after her destruction by light.
Return of Skjold: Skjold and Magna Neva guide Bjorn away from restoring the old chieftainship and toward uniting the surviving barbarians through a shared symbol.
