Helena: Channels a Crystallic fragment to sustain Gavra's defenses, nearly burns herself away, and hears Mathias warn that her search for Stefon may destroy her.
Wylas Velpa: Head of the Velpa Trading Company and owner of the Maelstrodomus. He abandons the fight, admits his political attack on the Arcanium, and bargains for the Harbingers' help.
Selendra Cassiandros: Burned but surviving Marquis of Gavra. She reaches the Southern Eye, promises provisions, and begins reestablishing authority among the refugees.
Mathias Ephelthine: Voice within Normandy's book who speaks to Helena while she is consumed by the Crystallic's light. He wants to reach the Ithelion and questions Helena's devotion to Stefon.
Whisper: Secures the ship's cannons, helps end the fighting, asks Lily and Madame Iris to remain behind, and learns the name of the weapon that nearly killed him.
Ernan: Returns toward the collapsing pier to help Bjorn and the wounded Harbingers reach the ship despite the approaching storm.
Aemon Toft: Insecure but well-meaning hereditary commander of the Southern Eye keep, frequently addressed by the wrong name by those around him.
Filmus: Blunt alchemist at the Southern Eye who sells potions, evaluates unusual objects, and recognizes the properties of Death's Kiss.
Old Simon: Prisoner in the Southern Eye keep who speaks in thieves' cant and claims to hear screaming and clanking from below.
Madame Iris and Lily: Two of Whisper's closest surviving connections to Gavra. He asks them to seek safety at the Southern Eye instead of joining the mainland expedition.

Eth: Goddess of New Beginnings whose statue becomes the focus of conflict among refugees struggling to explain Gavra's fall.
The Tangled One: Sea goddess whom some refugees believe caused the destruction because Eth failed to protect them.
Sethis: Goddess associated with the Gate of Sethis, an island near the mainland containing the flawless glint desired by Wylas.
Solarus: God of Light invoked through the power Helena channels while sustaining the Crystallic and Gavra's defenses.
Ithelion: Lost light of Piln and Mathias's declared destination. Its absence allows the storm and forgotten darkness to move across Scarsden.
Harbinger of Light Prophecy: Helena channels its language and meaning through hope and self-sacrifice, awakening the Crystallic fragment.

Harbingers of Light: Capture the Maelstrodomus, evacuate their allies, escape Gavra, and prepare to cross the Maelstrom toward Tyve.
Velpa Trading Company: Wylas's commercial network, which transported Arcanium cargo from the Shattered Isles and supplied the armed faction contesting the ship.
Arcanium: Secret order destroyed during Wylas's political campaign. Its Yore and Gander identity contracted with the Velpa company to transport glints.

Wall of Darkness and Water: Manifestation of the storm that overwhelms Gavra after the Crystallic light is withdrawn.
Maligned Maelstrom: Immense storm surrounding Tyve and the destination for which the Maelstrodomus was engineered.
Refugee Fleet: Merchant ships, galleons, and smaller craft fleeing Gavra. Some seek the Southern Eye while others turn toward the devastated Shattered Isles.
Southern Eye Farmland: Limited agricultural ground now expected to support a sudden influx of survivors.
Umtheran Mushrooms: Rare fungi Vyr offers Filmus in exchange for medicine, including varieties used for poison, ritual, intoxication, and wine.
Items and Technology
Maelstrodomus: Velpan prototype vessel built to survive the Maelstrom or vortex around Tyve. Its mechanical lower flaps require a trained crew to operate correctly.
Crystallic Fragment: Piece carried by Cassiandros and channeled by Helena to reignite Gavra's glint towers. Its power burns Helena and cannot hold the city indefinitely.
Glint Towers: Defensive structures that normally draw power from Piln. Helena's temporary light restores them until the evacuation is underway.
Black Glints: Corrupted stones transported in Velpa-marked cargo under Arcanium contracts and linked to sickness, darkness, and the disaster spreading through Scarsden.
Death's Kiss: Ancient black dagger that liquefied inside the Rusticulum and poisoned Whisper. Filmus says such relics are found rather than made and require two lives.
Marquis's Writ of Passage: Document Whisper gives Madame Iris to help her and Lily establish themselves safely at the Southern Eye.
Velpan Viper: Ornamental jeweled rapier taken from Wylas, apparently a family heirloom rather than a weapon with famous deeds.
Hidden Gavran Helmet: Old metal helmet bearing a deer-like emblem, found in a sealed compartment beneath Aemon Toft's fireplace.
Magic and Cosmology
Crystallic Ignition: Helena's hope and selflessness awaken the fragment and project enough light to reactivate Gavra's defenses.
Immolating Light: Fire surrounding Helena while she channels the Crystallic. It initially resembles harmless magic but begins consuming her life and setting the ship around her alight.
Veyan Possession: Darkness carried by the storm enters Gavrans and creates hostile shadow echoes until Helena's light drives it out.
Zone of Truth: Torrin's spell compels honest answers during the confrontation with Wylas, though it does not force him to speak.
Mathias's Communion: While unconscious within the light, Helena enters a dark inner space where Mathias questions her motives and reveals his desire to reach the Ithelion.
