Characters
Torrin: Refuses to sacrifice himself through the incomplete Crystallic and chooses to confront Kypheron after restoring the artifact. He leads the evacuation through Slyphash and rejects the Chain's ultimatum at Keph.
Normandy Borthal: Takes possession of the dark scepter despite Emrys's fear. During the night, a blurred figure confronts him in a dream and warns that the artifact's influence is already burning him.
Zandra: Recognizes the dark scepter as an artifact once carried by Ulvarian Titus, the greatest enemy of Darius. She does not know how it can be safely destroyed or contained.
Vendorante: A surviving Vey who helps Torrin locate Slyphash's hidden portal. Kypheron kills him while possessing the freed red dragon.
Melisandre: A highborn Vey who invokes her status, her service to Valens Avarith, and her exile under Sethis to compel the Librarian to reveal protected information.
Hoth: A proud leader among the evacuated barbarians. He challenges Bjorn's refusal to fight the Chain emissary, then provokes Bjorn into a long fistfight to defend his honor.
Chain Emissary: An enormous armored servant who offers Keph submission and slavery in exchange for Whisper and Ernan. He threatens to return with a battalion after Torrin and Bjorn reject him.
The Librarian: The keeper of knowledge at the Twilight Temple. After Melisandre invokes her authority, the Librarian reveals information about Kypheron, the Spear of Avorinth, and the Crystallic.
Gods and Religion
Kypheron: The awakened dragon god bred to burn the world. He commands the released dragons, possesses the freed red dragon, and declares that Tyve will be cleansed in fire.
Avaros: The ancient divine power credited with creating Kypheron and the dragons.
Sethis: The Goddess of Twilight who sheltered the exiled Vey. Melisandre invokes her standing under Sethis while demanding access to the Librarian's protected records.
Organizations and Societies
Harbingers of Light: Evacuate the Slyphash refugees, recover the dark scepter, investigate Kypheron's return, and reject the Chain's demand for Whisper and Ernan.
The Vey: Torrin's ancient people and former enemies of the dragons. Their surviving members help evacuate Slyphash and reveal the history of Kypheron and the War of Fang and Fire.
Plague Artists: The swamp-dwelling barbarians rescued from Slyphash. They follow Hoth and Elder Cyril through the portal to Keph after interpreting the dragons' return through their own traditions.
The Chain: A conquering force preparing to attack Keph. Its emissary demands the sons of the Chain and threatens to enslave the keep regardless of the Harbingers' decision.
Knights of Ithelias: Keph's defenders and explorers. They receive the Slyphash refugees, prepare for the Chain's approach, and wait to report what they discovered beneath the reservoir.
Creatures and Nature
Awakened Dragons: Countless dragons rising from Mount Kyphos and spreading across Tyve. Their return sets the southern horizon aflame and threatens travel across the continent.
Freed Red Dragon: The surviving dragon released from the chains beneath Slyphash. Kypheron later possesses its body, uses it to attack the Harbingers, and destroys it to create aberrant offspring.
Aberrant Dragonlings: Small creatures resembling a mixture of wyverns and insects. They burst from the red dragon, recover rapidly from apparently fatal wounds, and pursue the Harbingers through Slyphash.
Dragon Eggs: Six ancient eggs hidden within the Slyphash fortress. Torrin's group places them upon the tallest tower before abandoning the burning stronghold.
Shrikes: Winged mounts carrying the Harbingers, Vey, and refugees between Slyphash, the exiles' village, Keph, and the Twilight Temple.
Argylus: A glasslike being imprisoned at the Twilight Temple. Solitude reacts violently when Normandy brings the dark scepter near its enclosure.
Items and Technology
Crystallic: Torrin's incomplete divine artifact. It could potentially force Kypheron back to sleep at the cost of Torrin's life, while the completed artifact may accomplish the task without that sacrifice.
Dark Scepter: A black and gold weapon formerly carried by Ulvarian Titus and now held by Normandy. It silences Emrys, frightens Zandra, enrages Solitude, and appears connected to Normandy's threatening dream.
Spear of Avorinth: The weapon of Valens Avarith said to have ended the War of Fang and Fire. The Librarian identifies it as the only known weapon capable of confronting Kypheron directly.
Torrin's Compass: A device capable of directing Torrin toward the remaining Crystallic fragments. The Librarian identifies completing the artifact as the Harbingers' highest priority.
Magic and Cosmology
Kypheron's Possession: The dragon god's ability to seize control of another dragon, speak through its body, and reshape it into a vessel for aberrant offspring.
Crystallic Sacrifice: The incomplete artifact offers Torrin the power to force Kypheron back to sleep, but the attempt would consume Torrin's life or will.
Emrys's Fear: The Deathless Flame recoils from the dark scepter and briefly regains its voice to warn Normandy not to touch it.
Veyan Authority: Melisandre's titles and connections allow her to override the Librarian's redactions and recover knowledge hidden from the Harbingers.
Locations and Realms
Mount Kyphos: The volcanic prison from which Kypheron and the awakened dragons emerge. Its eruption fills the southern sky with fire and burning ash.
Slyphash: The ruined Veyan fortress used to imprison dragons and shelter refugees. Kypheron burns the stronghold after the evacuation begins.
Slyphash Portal: A hidden gateway concealed behind a wall and fed by an underground aquifer. It carries the refugees to Keph and the second Harbinger group to the Twilight Temple.
Keph: The Harbingers' stronghold and the destination of the evacuated refugees. The Chain threatens to return and level the keep with a battalion.
Twilight Temple: The sanctuary where Zandra, the Librarian, and Solitude encounter Normandy's dark scepter. The separated Harbingers reunite there before resting.
Dios Ostium: The sealed Door of God created by Valens Avarith and later reinforced by other powers. Its method of opening remains unknown to the Librarian.
History and Lore
Awakening of Kypheron: The dragon god rises after the crystal beneath Slyphash explodes and Mount Kyphos erupts. The Vey insist that this awakening should have been impossible.
War of Fang and Fire: The ancient conflict between the Vey and the dragons. Valens Avarith used the Spear of Avorinth to end the war and place Kypheron into slumber.
Evacuation of Slyphash: The Harbingers lead more than one hundred refugees through the hidden portal while Kypheron burns the fortress and releases aberrant dragonlings.
Chain's Ultimatum: The Chain offers Keph enslavement in exchange for Whisper and Ernan, then threatens to return with an army when Torrin and Bjorn refuse.
