This story is set 239 years after the Therianthropic Convergence, the Voidbreakers, a group once dedicated to defending against the Void Echoes, now function as mercenaries for hire. The story begins at the Voidbreaker outpost in Gentlebreeze, where three new recruits, Ginny Effilyn, Arvin Quickfoot, and Alaric of Timberheart are assigned to escort a scholar named Henry to the ruins of Fallowbrae. Fallowbrae was once a human town, destroyed long ago, and Henry is researching its history, particularly the Chambet family and their involvement in the Theanthropic Convergence.
The group’s journey to the ruins begins with various encounters, including a tense argument between the outpost’s leaders, Exemplar Kane and Vanguard Riven. Along the way, they face battles with dangerous creatures, such as a hill giant and a storm boar, and uncover cryptic messages hinting at a dark history surrounding Fallowbrae. Henry is revealed to possess four powerful crystal pylons, which raise suspicion among the group. After reaching Fallowbrae, the group faces further dangers, including an intense battle with a pair of owlbears. During the fight, Alaric uses a mysterious 20-sided die given to him by a fortune teller, which causes time to rewind, restoring him to full health and giving him unsettling insights into the power he wields. As they continue their exploration, they uncover clues that point to a forgotten king and hidden magical powers.
When the group returns to the Voidbreaker camp, they find it in disarray, with all non-wolffolk members being dismissed. They also learn that Henry, despite his seemingly scholarly intentions, has stolen the arcane pylons and committed horrific crimes, including forging documents and burning a scholar alive. The group is now tasked with tracking him down and uncovering the full extent of his connection to the mysteries of Fallowbrae.
