#007 | Meeting At Dusk

Dive into the full story

Two investigators, one table, and neither of them quite willing to show their hand.

Reinald & Brigitte Together (21st Leaffall)

21st Leaffall β€” Dusk: The Barnacled Barrel. Reinald is early. Brigitte arrives, clocks Kaelis in the back corner wearing someone else's face, and doesn't look again. The conversation that follows accomplishes a great deal by appearing not to β€” they talk around everything important until they don't. The water. The dam. Felix, who Brigitte has already visited, which Reinald receives poorly and says nothing about. The necklace, which he mentions with the tone of someone trying not to sound interested in retrieving it.

21st Leaffall β€” Dusk: Aveline walks by and delivers a warning in the language of pleasant small talk. It doesn't land until the guards push through the door two minutes later. The tavern empties. Reinald puts it together on the street. They receive a ten percent discount coupon on their way out.

21st Leaffall β€” Dusk: They agree to look into the dam. They agree to meet in the morning. No location is named. Reinald extends his hand β€” and the forest comes back. The fox on the stone. She holds on a beat too long. They part in opposite directions. Neither looks back.

Reinald's Perspective (21st Leaffall β€” Night)

21st Leaffall β€” Night: Back at the Ragnaisse mansion, Victoria lays out what Lewys has been doing β€” extended custody, harsher sentencing, a document borrowed from his desk. Reinald suggests it looks more like strategy than administration. He mentions Brigitte. Victoria is skeptical. Aveline offers a way into the dam through De Ragnaisse supply contracts β€” legal standing, an arranged inspection, day after tomorrow. Reinald accepts, and asks, carefully, to bring Brigitte. Victoria raises sensible objections. Aveline tips the balance. They're going.

21st Leaffall β€” Night: Chess with RΓΆka. Reinald loses in a way that has nothing to do with chess. He takes a long bath, comes back in a borrowed robe β€” Needlethorne Sheep Farm, the tag reads, near the dam. The same crest as the pamphlet Pascal was reading at the Drunken Phoenix. He notes it. Doesn't pursue it.

21st Leaffall β€” Night: The chess game ends when his mechanical arm misfires for the first time since the LegendKeeper gem was placed inside it. RΓΆka goes quiet in a way that isn't theatrical. There's something about Brigitte he can't place. Neither of them says it plainly. They head to bed.

Brigitte's Perspective (21st–22nd Leaffall)

21st Leaffall β€” Night: She returns to find Vesper has claimed her room. Sonya fights it. The fight is already lost. Brigitte proposes a girls' night, and they move her things into Sonya's room β€” gothic garlands, skull with a candle, decorated with intention and no apologies. Gurak knocks looking for Vesper, wearing something like a collar, carrying something wrapped in cloth he doesn't explain. He closes the door without saying anything that matters. Sonya wonders what's wrong with him. Brigitte doesn't answer, but she understands the shape of it.

22nd Leaffall β€” Past Midnight: She waits for Sonya to sleep and slips back to the main hall. The family filters in without Coldrock. Rhazeth stays, sees the state of the bar, and starts cleaning without comment. Brigitte gets up and takes the tables. She tries to open a conversation. He turns it back to her.

22nd Leaffall β€” Past Midnight: He tells her she needs to fix things with Coldrock and the others β€” not for his sake. If another vote is forced, he'll have to reconsider. He cannot have his family split a second time. He says "a second time" with emphasis she doesn't push on. Then he tells her she's been here a year and knows what everyone brings to the table, but she doesn't know what happened to them before the family existed. Nobody's obligated to share. But asking isn't forbidden. He turns to Branded, tells him to leave his glasses, goes to bed. Brigitte watches it happen and stays with the weight of it.

22nd Leaffall β€” Past Midnight: He presses a coin into her hand β€” gold, red ring β€” and tells her to take a room at the Drunken Phoenix. Don't involve herself with Vesper. Keep her head down. Find the mayor. She's at the door when he speaks again, not looking at her. Here we are a family, Brigitte. It lands differently than it would have a tenday ago. She pockets the coin and walks out.

22nd Leaffall β€” Past Midnight: The streets are quiet. She is thinking about people she's never thought to ask about, and the year she spent not asking.
