Current situation

A lot has changed in Stormhaven since the war. Once the capital of Kildar—the largest, richest city with the most diverse and advanced economy—it is now only a shadow of its former self. Its new role is that of a border city, separating the territory of the Lords' Alliance from the goblins of Anfyn. Stormhaven was fortunate enough to avoid the same fate as Torrica, which was largely destroyed, but only time will tell whether it can recover and find a new, better purpose.

General layout

Stormhaven began as a modest coastal town, but over the centuries it grew steadily, absorbing surrounding villages and farmlands until it became one of the largest cities in Kildar. The city is built along a broad natural bay that once served as a thriving harbor. Three rivers converge into the bay, dividing the city into districts and providing fresh water.

After the war, the city was heavily damaged. Many sections of the walls still have gaping holes, and far fewer buildings remain than there were fifteen years ago. Those that survived are often more modest than before. Once, Stormhaven consisted of many distinct districts, each with its own people, industry, atmosphere, and purpose. Today, however, the city can be divided into just three distinct parts. These areas are officially administered separately and are effectively divided by internal borders.

  1. The former Elanium, Gallows End, and Varina districts belong to the Lords' Alliance. They treat this area primarily as a fortress guarding the border between their territory and the goblins of Anfyn. Before the war, it was the wealthiest part of the city and suffered less damage than the southern districts. However, it never had much industry, so today it consists largely of expensive houses. Some are still inhabited, while many others have been converted for military or administrative purposes, such as hospitals. Entry into the Northern Part is generally restricted. Anyone wishing to cross the border must obtain a permit from the Lords' Alliance. While getting one is not particularly difficult, it does require completing a bureaucratic process. One exception exists: goblins are allowed to cross the bridge into Elanium to pray at the Temple of Lady Elaine, but they need a special permission for this.

  2. The Southern Part includes the former Riverbend district and the area surrounding Jahred University. It is governed entirely by goblins and fey. This area was poor even before the war, and naturally it has not become wealthy in the years since. However, at the request of one of their leaders, the goblins made a genuine effort to help the local population rebuild. They salvaged materials from destroyed buildings and used them to construct new homes. Although there are fewer houses than before, the new ones are sturdy and well built. They became known as Brukkaracks, named after the goblin leader who initiated the project. As a result, the district is inhabited not only by goblins and fey but also by some of Stormhaven's former citizens. Compared to the Northern Part, the atmosphere here feels much freer. Jahred University is the district's defining landmark—anyone with knowledge to share is welcome to give lectures there.

  3. The Middle Part consists of the former Sunnyspire and Ironclad districts. It serves as a buffer zone between the other two regions and is jointly administered by the goblins and the Lords' Alliance. Most of Stormhaven's remaining citizens—those who did not leave for other cities after the war—still live here, doing everything they can to revive the city's economy.

Population

Stormhaven's population remains remarkably diverse, although the internal borders now keep its communities physically separated.

Northern Part

The Northern Part is inhabited primarily by soldiers, servants, and other members of the Lords' Alliance. Other residents include students of Eventide Academy and former nobles who swore allegiance to the Lords' Alliance but lost most of their wealth during the destruction of the city. A small number of goblins and fey are also permitted to live in and around the Temple of Lady Elaine, where they serve the temple.

Middle Part

The Middle Part is home to the remaining citizens of Stormhaven, who earn a living however they can. Smiths search for enough materials to produce at least a few tools, merchants look for goods to trade, fishers head out to sea to bring back food, and many others struggle simply to make ends meet.

Both members of the Lords' Alliance and goblins regularly visit this district to conduct business, purchase supplies, or negotiate matters involving both sides.

Southern Part

The Southern Part is the most diverse region of the city. It is inhabited mainly by goblins and fey, who can broadly be divided into two groups.

Both groups arrived in Stormhaven during or shortly after the war and chose not to return to Anfyn because another religious civil war had broken out there.

The first group continues to worship Lady Elaine and regularly travels to her temple to pray, though they were never fanatical enough to fight over their beliefs.

The second group abandoned their faith in Lady Elaine altogether and sought new purposes and inspirations in life.

Although tensions sometimes arise between these two communities, they generally coexist peacefully and understand one another.

Finally, some of Stormhaven's former citizens also remained in the Southern Part and now live alongside goblins and fey. They do not always enjoy the arrangement, but the goblins made a sincere effort to build a society where everyone could live together, and their attempts have been largely successful.

General economy

Before the war, Stormhaven's economy was incredibly diverse. The city produced almost everything imaginable, from everyday goods to complex siege engines. It was also a center of education, banking, trade, and continental logistics. Today, almost all of that has been disrupted.

Banks were looted during the war, trade shifted to Arland, and even the few surviving forges struggle to operate because supply lines remain unreliable. More often than not, however, the forges themselves did not survive the destruction. The situation became so desperate that Stormhaven suffered several famines during the first years after the war. Most of the population survived only thanks to food surpluses from Il-Heban and humanitarian aid provided by the Lords' Alliance.

Today, Stormhaven is perhaps one of the poorest city in Kildar. Whatever it manages to produce is consumed locally rather than exported.
