Nestled where the vast Arland Forest meets the sea, Arland has long stood at the crossroads of nature, magic, and trade. Once the second-largest city in Kildar and a rival to the former capital of Stormhaven, Arland's importance grew dramatically during the war with the Lords' Alliance. The actions of its Governor ultimately helped secure the city's position as the new capital of Kildar and its primary point of contact with Faerûn.
Arland remains deeply shaped by its High Elf and Wood Elf heritage, though the city's character is increasingly defined by its relationship with the Lords' Alliance. The contrast between elven tradition, refined artistry, magic, and the brutal traditions of the Colosseum still defines much of local life, particularly within the Elvish District. The district is home to Arland's greatest artisans, scholars, mages, and warriors, and remains largely untouched by the Alliance's magical suppression fields.
To the east lies the Lords' District, once known as the Harbour District. What was formerly a rough and bustling quarter of docks, merchants, and shipwrights has been transformed into the administrative and commercial heart of the capital. Stone buildings, orderly streets, organised markets, modern machinery, and the institutions of the Lords' Alliance now dominate the district. Its harbour has become Kildar's primary gateway to Faerûn, bringing enormous wealth to the city while also making the Alliance's influence impossible to ignore.
This rapid transformation has brought prosperity, new technology, foreign merchants, and opportunities to Arland, but not everyone welcomes the change. Many citizens appreciate the improved living standards and expanded trade, while others feel that the growing presence of the Lords' Alliance amounts to a cultural and economic siege. The Governor must constantly balance the interests of the Alliance, Kildar's cities, and Arland's High and Wood Elf communities.
Beyond the city's walls lies Arland Forest, one of Kildar's greatest sources of rare herbs, alchemical ingredients, timber, and other natural resources. It is also an ancient and perilous wilderness inhabited by secretive Elven settlements and creatures far more dangerous than the ordinary beasts that roam its depths. The city's position beside a relatively stable entrance to the forest is what originally earned it the name Arland Gate.
Today, Arland is a city of contrasts: ancient elven traditions alongside foreign influence, refined craftsmanship beside industrial trade, and the tranquil beauty of the forest alongside the political machinery of the Lords' Alliance. It is the capital of Kildar, the country's gateway to Faerûn, and a city whose future is being shaped by forces far greater than either its elves or its new allies can fully control.
