The Moonshade Expanse

Overview:
The Moonshade Expanse is a rugged and untamed region defined by shadowed glades, windswept hills, and the spectral glow of the moonlight that filters through its dense woodlands and rocky bluffs. Named for the way moonlight seems to linger unnaturally long in certain parts of its forests and valleys, the region has long been steeped in folklore, whispered legends, and quiet superstition.

The Expanse is home to Timberfall Hollow, Wyrmhollow Wood, Algorand’s Crossing, and the Thornshadow Bluffs, each contributing to the region’s distinct character. Travelers and merchants frequently navigate The Old Timber Path, an age-worn trade route that skirts the treacherous depths of Wyrmhollow Wood, connecting Brambleford, Timberfall Hollow, and Algorand’s Crossing. Though the land is rich and bountiful, its ancient forests and misty hills hold secrets both forgotten and forbidden.

Settlements:

  • Algorand’s Crossing⭐ – The seat of government for the Moonshade Expanse, a thriving coastal city ruled by the benevolent Gossard family, with Lord Rostren Gossard governing from the 200-year-old Dawnwatch Keep. Situated along the Alprenia Sea, it serves as a vital trade hub, connecting coastal cities to the northeast and major seaports further south.

  • Brambleford - A farming settlement along the Bramble Run River, known for its blackberry fields, grain mills, and warm hospitality.

  • Driftmoor - A a quiet fishing village on the shores of the Duskmere, where mist clings to the water and locals whisper of strange lights beneath the surface.

  • Galehaven - A key trade hub despite the dangers of Ulistys' Maw: The Devouring Sea, where sailors often pay tribute to the sea goddess to avoid her wrath.

  • Highvale - A large farming town beyond the Thornshadow Bluffs, known for its fertile fields, terraced crops, and windmill-dotted ridges.

  • Oakstead - A peaceful village built around the massive Elder Oak, known for its skilled woodworkers, welcoming hearths, and deep-rooted traditions.

  • Timberfall Hollow - A small but resilient logging town at the edge of Wyrmhollow Wood, known for its skilled woodcutters, cautious hunters, and deep respect for the forest.

Geography & Notable Features:

  • Bastion of Varnak the Red - A crumbling fortress swallowed by Wyrmhollow Wood, where the echoes of a long-dead warlord still haunt the ruins, and fortune-seekers vanish without a trace.

  • The Alprenia Sea - A vast and well-traveled sea along the eastern coast, known for its prosperous trade routes and steady currents.

  • The Duskmere – A dark, reflective lake nestled within the southeastern hills, surrounded by thick mist at dawn and dusk. It is said that one who gazes too long into the water may see not only their reflection but also glimpses of the past… or future.

  • The Hollowveil Glades – A hauntingly beautiful stretch of meadow and sparse woodland, where the moonlight casts an eerie silver glow, even on cloudy nights. Some say the glades are a crossroads between worlds, where fey and spirits are most active.

  • The Old Timber Path – An ancient and weathered trade road, its cobbles cracked and worn by time. It winds through the Expanse, skirting the edge of Wyrmhollow Wood, connecting Brambleford, Timberfall Hollow, and Algorand’s Crossing. Many travelers use it, though few are comfortable traveling it after dark.

  • Thornshadow Bluffs – A series of rugged, craggy cliffs and windswept hills, forming a natural border between Wyrmhollow Wood and the open farmlands beyond. Named for the gnarled brambles and twisted trees that cling stubbornly to the rock, the bluffs are home to hidden caves, old bandit hideouts, and lost shrines.

  • Ulistys' Maw: The Devouring Sea - A treacherous and unforgiving sea where pirates, sea creatures, and deadly storms reign; sailors often throw treasures overboard in a desperate attempt to appease Ulistys and escape her wrath.

  • Wyrmhollow Wood – A vast and ancient forest, filled with towering trees, whispering shadows, and long-forgotten ruins. Strange creatures lurk within, and moonlight glades have been said to shift between here and other places…
