Overview

Brackenhollow is a dense, fog-bound marsh south of Trellsen, a maze of ancient brambles, twisted trees, and dark still pools where the paths shift and the mist never fully lifts. It has an eerie beauty, but the folk of Trellsen count it cursed and speak of it with fear, and few go near. At its heart stand the ruins of Valthrus Manor, and around them the marsh has earned a long and sinister name for the travelers who go in and are never seen again.

The Land

The marsh is a tangled maze of bramble and bog, veiled in fog that clings to the water and hides the way. Murky pools reflect the gnarled branches above, and the trails shift and double back, treacherous for all but the most practiced. At dusk the Mists of Brackenhollow rise and hang until dawn, a thick fog that distorts sound, twists shadows, and turns the mind around. Those who listen too closely to it are said to lose their way in the deep marsh and never come out.

Life & Dangers

Brackenhollow is dangerous ground. The shifting paths and the night Mists lose the unwary, and over the years hunters, traders, and curious townsfolk alike have vanished into it without a trace. It is shunned for good reason, and those who enter go warned that the marsh does not give back what it takes.

Lore & Beliefs

Trellsen tells many tales of the marsh, and most of them end badly.

The Ghost Lights: Blue-green lights that flicker through the brambles at night. Some call them lost souls seeking help; others say they lure the unwary deeper, to a place they do not return from.

The Valthrus Treasure: Rumor holds the Valthrus family left great wealth in the manor before their fall, hidden vaults and cursed gold. Many have gone seeking it; most come back empty-handed, and some not at all.

The Marsh Wraith: The ghost of an old druid said to have tried to cleanse the marsh of its curse and failed, and to haunt it still. Whether it guards the marsh or menaces those within, the townsfolk agree it is best left alone.

The Shadow Grove: Deep beyond the manor, legend places a grove where the trees grow so thick that no sunlight reaches the ground, a crossroads where the wall between the living and the dead runs thin. Some say the Valthrus family drew on its power, and that it holds that power still.

The Fall of the Valthrus: Around the hearth-fires they still ask what brought the family down. Some say forbidden magic, some say they offended an old spirit or power. Whatever the truth, the manor has been a place of dread ever since.

Notable Sites

Valthrus Manor: The ruined seat of the once-powerful Valthrus family, at the heart of the marsh, its spires barely seen through the fog. Long abandoned and longer rumored haunted.

The Whispering Bramble: The tangled paths around the manor, named for the faint voices said to drift through the branches, some murmuring a traveler's own name, some whispering warnings.
