The Afterworld is many things. It is an infinitely vast plane of potential, possibilities, but also danger. It is where the souls of the mortal dead come to rest, it is where the realms of the gods are, and it is so much more. In our setting, the Afterworld serves as the home of the Twiceborn in the form of the Realm of Liminalis as well as the realms of the 15 gods of the Pantheon.
After the Cataclysm occurred on Mortalis and the gods were cut off from their people, they constructed a new realm in the Afterworld to serve as a home for their newly built creations, the Twiceborn. Knowing that these Twiceborn souls would be most familiar with the look and feel of Tellus, the Realm of Liminalis was designed by the gods to resemble a traditional mortal village.
Several of the gods had a direct hand in the facilities and capabilities of the Realm of Liminalis. To further facilitate the Twiceborn and their new abilities to travel back and forth between the planes, Navtix brought the Shadowgate to this Realm. To assist the Twiceborn in getting around the Afterworld with their slow, corporeal bodies, Xeros built an extensive railway system to the various gods' realms, with the Liminalis as its hub. All of the gods have opened up their realms to travel to and assist the Twiceborn with resources, knowledge, and abilities that can affect Tellus in their stead.
The Realm of Kildarim, where the recently deceased souls have traditionally arrived, has been thrown into chaos due to the Dead Gates being held open. In the past when souls arrived there, the way back into the mortal plane was shut behind them and they were guided through the Afterworld by Kildarim and his stewards to their final resting places. Now that the Dead Gates no longer close, lost souls can wander back into Mortalis, which confuses and angers them. While it is technically possible for Twiceborn to travel this way to Tellus, it is considered a suicide mission due to the overwhelming forces of undead that gather on the other side of the Dead Gate as well as the detrimental effects of concentrated Shroudland exposure. In addition, the Dead Gates are fixed locations on Tellus which makes travel this way much less flexible than the Shadowgate of Navtix.
