What is an NPC?

An NPC (non player character) is any character that is NOT a player's main character. All the staff are playing NPCs, and anything you fight is going to be an NPC. Since The Realm of Liminalis is a Players-versus-Environment LARP, the enemies you are fighting are always going to be NPCs rather than Player Characters. Every player is required to take an NPC shift at each Convergence.

What do I have to do as an NPC?

NPC requirements vary as widely as the kinds of adventures we send people on. You will have an NPC shift at some point during the weekend, and you will have to fill a variety of NPC roles during that time. You could be asked to fight in an adventure, be a wandering merchant, play an archaeologist being consumed by plants, a teen turned half way into a horse, or someone who needs to be rescued. The limit does not exist. IF YOU ARE STRICTLY NON COM: make sure you let us know so we know not to throw you into combat scenarios on your NPC shift.

Required NPC garb

All Player NPCs are required to be in all black garb that we can throw costumes on top of. Please make sure to show up to your NPC shift wearing your black garb.

How often do I NPC?

You will be asked to have one NPC shift per Convergence you attend, and you will be required to NPC one of the Big Battles. (You may choose to NPC both Battles if you would like)

If something comes up during a Convergence and you cannot do your NPC shift (injury, illness, mental fatigue etc.) let us know, we can probably shift you to another time OR figure out another way you can help out to not cause you further problems.

Procedure for going to the Longhouse and getting NPC brief

At our current site there is a building across the road that is the staff house and also the NPC room. We call this building the Longhouse. When it is time for your NPC shift, head over to the door on the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the building, that's the NPC side. If you can show up a bit early, that's great but DO NOT be late. When you arrive, Shauna or another staff member will get you set up with your NPC brief. There's plenty of time to joke around and play after you have your brief, please pay solid attention during your brief so you know what you are expected to do.

You are a Creature with 5 HP. You are vulnerable to Turn, which drops you to 0. You have infinite respawns. You can call Repel once per spawn.
Your goal is to chase the players around the field, until they start to engage you and then you run away in terror or fight if you need to.

If you are a combat NPC you will be provided with any weapons, Loot, and costume you will need. If you are an RP NPC, you will be given any props and costume you will need and you will be given a specific task to do which could be anything from being a merchant to a rabble rouser to a storyteller.

NPC fighting rules and guidelines

The MOST IMPORTANT THING to remember as an NPC: You are NOT the Hero. Your goal is not to kill all the PCs, it's to make the combat encounter challenging, interesting, and fun (and to follow whatever your brief is.) Unless you are specifically told otherwise, you should not actively go after healers or noncoms (sometimes you are going to be playing an intelligent strategist bad guy who would go after these people.)

You will have a specific goal in your NPC brief, and you will be expected to follow that brief. If your goal is to protect something, you should not be sprinting around the field a hundred feet away from the thing you are protecting. If your goal is to harry the players, you should not be puppy dog guarding an object on the field. If your goal is to perform a ritual, you should be trying to perform the ritual.

You might be given a certain number of Calls to perform in combat. Use them. The goal of having those Calls on an adventure or in a battle is to make it more challenging for the players.

You will be provided any weapons you will need during your NPC combat. If you would like to use your own weapons, you may bring them to your NPC shift as long as they have been approved at Inspection. However, there may be situations where we need to arm you with specific weapons, depending on the circumstances.
