Oh gods, your character died during a battle or skirmish? What do you do now?
This page goes over death mechanics and what to do when your character dies. Character death is an inevitable part of this game, seeing as you are heroes battling monstrous foes, and while it can be scary or frustrating it can also be shining moment in your character's story. Death is something that your character has already been through before as a Twiceborn and as such, can be treated as another new beginning to your character's story.
The mechanics of dying are simple. Once your character reaches zero health points (HP), your bleed timer starts. The standard bleed timer is 2 minutes, but there are many ways to increase that time limit. If your bleed timer runs out before anyone can heal you, your character has died. When your character dies in battle, your body and soul are transported back through the Shadowgate where they will meet with Kildarim, the god of Death and Endings.
There may be a bit of time before Kildarim is ready to meet. Until that time, your character cannot go on any skirmishes or battles, but can still participate in other activities in Liminalis, such as alchemy, enchanting, or rituals. We as staff will do our best to get to you as soon as possible to avoid your character missing out on any activities outside of the Shadowgate.
At some point after your character's death, you will meet with Kildarim in the Realm of Liminalis. He will ask you questions about your character's death and about your character in general, after which he will present you with 10 cards. Depending on your character level, there will be a certain number of permanent death cards mixed in with the resurrection cards. The higher level your character is, the more magic and might your soul holds, the higher chance of permanent death. Of these 10 cards, you will draw 1 card to determine your character's fate. Alternatively, if you don't want to draw a card and want to choose death, you can do so.
There may be some extremely rare items or unique encounters that may be able to change your fate, but those must be discovered via story and quest lines in game.
Your character has the Terminal condition, which means that your character will soon depart this Realm. Where your character will go and what they will do is up to you and the story you want for your character. Does your character want to go to one of the gods realms to rest? Do you want your character to lose their sanity and end up joining the ranks of the Bloodless (i.e if you wanted your character to become a baddie NPC)? Narratively, you can come up with whatever ending you want for your character, but once you decide that ending please let the Crossroads know so story can document it.
But back to the Terminal condition, this condition means that your character cannot do anything in Liminalis or through the Shadowgate except visit with friends and comrades to say your character's final goodbyes. You can take as long as you want with this, even the rest of the event if you so choose. Whenever you are ready to start a new character, please visit the Crossroads to record your previous character's departure and arrival of a new character. This new character will not receive any starting resources at this time, but will at subsequent events. Once you start a new character, you can play any aspect of the game as normal.
There may be an opportunity for your new character to start with something that used to belong to your old character but the details of what you can pass on and how it would work are still being developed.
