Unrecognized Territories

Unrecognized Territories

Not everywhere in Khorvaire fits inside the Treaty of Thronehold's legal map. The treaty was negotiated by nations that had the military standing, diplomatic leverage, or political timing to get a seat at the table—and it reflects their priorities, their borders, and their definition of who counts. What it left out wasn't an oversight, but a choice.

These regions are unrecognized, unrepresented, or effectively unclaimed in the treaty's framework. They don't receive the protections that Thronehold signatories extend to each other—legal standing for citizens abroad, trade access, border guarantees, the theoretical prohibition on military aggression. They also aren't bound by the treaty's constraints, which cuts both ways. A nation outside Thronehold can't invoke the treaty when its borders are violated, but it also isn't obligated to observe extradition of war criminals or honor the diplomatic immunity of foreign agents.

Droaam — Not recognized by the Treaty of Thronehold, and not particularly bothered by that fact. Droaam is a nation of medusas, ogres, harpies, gnolls, minotaurs, and more, unified under the rule of the Daughters of Sora Kell—three legendary hag sisters whose combined power and cunning forged a coalition out of creatures the rest of Khorvaire calls monsters. Droaam exports mercenary labor and demands to be taken seriously. Increasingly, it has to be.

The Demon Wastes — The blighted northern reaches of Khorvaire, where the earth is scarred, the sky feels wrong, and fiendish overlords from the Age of Demons lie imprisoned beneath a landscape that has never fully healed. Barbarian tribes called the Carrion Tribes roam the Wastes in service to dark powers. The Ghaash'kala—orc warriors sworn to the binding flame—patrol the Labyrinth, a maze of canyons that serves as the primary barrier between the Wastes and the rest of the continent. Beyond the Labyrinth lies Ashtakala, a city of demons that has existed since before mortals walked the world. No one goes to the Demon Wastes voluntarily.

Cyre (The Mournland) — There is no Cyre. On the 20th of Olarune, 994 YK, a wall of dead-gray mist swallowed the nation whole—cities, armies, civilians, everything. What remains is the Mournland: a blighted wasteland where healing magic fails, the dead don't rot, and the landscape defies natural law. No one has explained it. No one has claimed it. Cyran survivors live as refugees in other nations, stateless and grieving, and the rest of the continent tries very hard not to think about the fact that whatever happened to Cyre could, in theory, happen again.
