Weapon and Equipment Traits

Weapon and Equipment Traits: How Gear Behaves

Weapon and Equipment Traits are the rules tags that explain how a piece of gear functions, what systems it interacts with, and what special handling or tactical options it provides. On weapons, these traits modify attacks, damage, action economy, concealment, reach, alternate damage types, ammunition use, or interactions with other subsystems. On armor, shields, cybernetics, and other gear, these traits identify whether an item is powered, analog, magical, archaic, consumable, or otherwise unusual in a way that matters mechanically.aonsrd+4

In Starfinder 2e, weapon traits are not decorative. They often define a weapon’s tactical identity more strongly than its raw damage die, determining whether it is easier to conceal, better for repeated attacks, able to deal alternate damage types, or vulnerable to technology-targeting effects. The same principle applies to broader equipment: a Tech shield, an Analog rifle, and an archaic relic blade might all occupy the same inventory slot, but they answer to very different rules pressures.

Core functions of gear traits

Weapon and Equipment Traits usually answer one or more of the following questions:

  • How is this used?
Does it favor repeated attacks, reach, thrown use, alternate grips, or hidden carry?

  • What systems does it rely on?
Does it use power cells, onboard electronics, smart systems, or no active electronics at all?

  • What can affect it?
Can it be targeted by technology-disrupting abilities, or is it immune because it is analog?

  • What role does it fill?
Is it a utility sidearm, a stealth piece, a battlefield manipulator, a salvage tool, or a faction-signature item?

This makes gear traits some of the most important shorthand in the equipment chapter. They let players and GMs understand not just what an item does on paper, but also the tactical and narrative niche it occupies.

Technology-state traits

The most important Starfall-facing split in gear traits is the divide between Tech and Analog. A Tech item incorporates electronics, computer systems, and power sources, which means it can interact with abilities that target technology and may be disrupted, drained, or hacked. An Analog item deliberately avoids such systems and is immune to abilities that target technology, though it also gives up some interactions tied to powered gear and runes unless other traits say otherwise.

This distinction is central to Starfall’s setting identity. In a galaxy shaped by cybernetics, magitech, salvage culture, and power instability, “Tech or Analog?” is often a more important field question than “simple or martial?”

Weapon-handling traits

These are the traits that shape how a weapon behaves in the hand and during a fight.

  • Agile reduces the multiple-attack penalty on second and later Strikes, making it ideal for rapid-attack builds or close-quarters play.

  • Versatile lets a weapon deal a different listed damage type than its default, increasing tactical flexibility against resistances or vulnerabilities.

  • Thrown lets a melee weapon be hurled at range and adds Strength to the damage roll as normal for melee use.

  • Concealable makes a weapon easier to hide, granting a circumstance bonus to Stealth checks and DCs to conceal it.

These traits often define a weapon’s identity more than its die size does. A low-damage concealable analog pistol and a high-damage tech rifle are not just stronger and weaker versions of the same concept—they belong to different use cases, legal ecosystems, and tactical expectations.

Equipment-form and subsystem traits

Not every important gear tag belongs strictly to weapons. Armor, shields, augmentations, and utility devices can all carry traits that govern how they interact with power, repair, upgrades, and targeting. In Starfall, these traits are especially important because equipment often sits at the boundary between survival tool, social signifier, and faction-controlled technology.

Weapon and Equipment Traits are the practical language of gear in Starfall Galaxy: they tell you how an item fights, what systems it depends on, what can disrupt it, and what kind of world had to exist to make it.
