In the closing days of the Terran Republic’s dominance, hubris and desperation finally tore open the floor beneath its capital. A Riftgate experiment under Terra’s seat of power collapsed into a full rift tear, vomiting a demonic maelstrom directly into the Republic’s core megacities. Malevolent rift entities—Horrors, Furies, Shriekers and worse—poured through the breach, and in the span of hours billions were butchered or consumed, whole districts reduced to screaming runes etched in fire and psychic residue.

The Incursion mortally wounded the Republic as a political entity. Its fleets and legions fought like cornered animals, and the Ascendant himself led the counter-attack, driving the demonic tide back toward the rupture at staggering personal cost. When the final Soul Demon was forced back through the gate and the wound in reality slammed shut, Terra’s skies were quiet—but the Republic’s heart was broken, and its people were left staring at a ruined capital and a collapsing dream.

At the very end of the battle, the Ascendant fell, grievously impaled at the brink of the sealed hellgate by the Soul Demon’s last strike. His followers refused to let their living saint die on a battlefield turned charnel pit. They entombed his failing body in a cryogenic sarcophagus, sealing what remained of his essence in frozen reverence. The sarcophagus was loaded aboard the Directorate’s capital ship along with legions of the faithful; these exiles, escorted by several legions of Sider Stratiotes, abandoned the wounded Inner Sphere to seek a purer destiny in the Outer dark.

This exodus birthed a new polity: the Genesis Ascendancy, a faith-driven Human nation in the Outer Sphere, sworn to reforge humanity around devotion to the Ascendant and to prepare the stars for his prophesied revival. Back home, the Terran Republic never recovered. Its authority fractured into corporate cartels, diaspora communities, and opportunistic powers, leaving Terra itself as a somber pilgrimage site, not a capital.

Significance

  • Pilgrimage & Memory: Terra’s ruins and memorial complexes allow PCs to undertake pilgrim journeys, research lost family lines, or dig through suppressed archives that contradict official stories about who authorized the Rift project.

  • Relic Retrieval & Theology: The Ascendant’s sarcophagus spawns schisms and missions—orders seeking relics from the battle, encoded sermons, or genetic samples from Sider Stratiotes who bled alongside him, used for miracles, propaganda, or biotech.

  • Refugee Diaspora Networks: Human and multi-species communities that fled after the Incursion operate shadow economies, mutual aid networks, and memory shrines, giving PCs social leverage, black-market access, or obligations across the Inner and Outer Spheres.

Societal Impact

The Incursion shattered trust in Inner Sphere institutions, especially any regime that treats Rift technology as a shortcut rather than a negotiated hazard. Terran officials, Vaelen advisors, and corporate backers all get blamed in different narratives, feeding conspiracy cults and political movements that shape present-day law, security doctrine, and religious practice.

For humanity, the event cemented a split identity: one branch turning inward and devout as the Genesis Ascendancy, another scattering into secular, mercantile, and mercenary roles under the Commission era. Terra’s transformation into a tourism-and-pilgrimage economy reinforces humanity’s self-image as a people defined by both fall and survival, fueling art, myth, and recruitment for everything from hoplite legions to refugee charities.

Aftermath

Saint in Stasis
The Ascendant’s cryogenic sarcophagus becomes both relic and political powder keg—whoever controls it claims a mandate over the faithful, while others whisper that opening it could unleash new Rift taint or a reborn demigod.

Birth of the Genesis Ascendancy
The Genesis Ascendancy leaves the Inner Sphere burned and disillusioned, taking with it hoplite legions and a critical slice of Terran talent, and reappears on Outer Sphere star charts as a zealous, expansionist frontier theocracy with its roots in trauma.

Terran Republic’s Quiet Collapse
After the Incursion, Terra’s system falls under private and cartel control, while humanity diffuses across the galaxy as mercenary companies, corporate cadres, and scattered diasporas—no longer a singular political will, but a scar woven into a hundred flags.

The Terran Incursion is the fault line under nearly every Human story in Starfall: a single Rift-born catastrophe that broke a republic, birthed a theocracy, and left the galaxy with one more burned reminder that in Starfall, every attempt to master the Rift is a wager with annihilation.
