The Zhentarim, a.k.a. the Black Network. If the Harpers are secret idealists and the Lord’s Alliance is lawful authority, the Zhentarim are brutally honest about one thing:
Power is power. Let’s get some.
They’re not cartoon villains (most of the time). They’re pragmatists, fixers, and opportunists who believe the world belongs to whoever is smart—and ruthless—enough to take it.
The Zhentarim exist to:
Acquire wealth
Control trade routes
Accumulate influence
Build power networks (legal and illegal)
They don’t care how stability happens—only that they profit from it.
Their philosophy:
Morality is flexible. Loyalty is not.
Pretty much anyone useful:
Mercenaries
Rogues
Warlocks
Fighters
Shady merchants
Ambitious nobles
Former criminals going “legit” (sort of)
They reward competence. Failures don’t last long.
The Black Network works through:
Front businesses
Trade guilds
Mercenary contracts
Smuggling rings
“Security services”
They’re happy to:
Protect a town—for a price
Eliminate monsters—if it benefits them
Undermine rivals quietly
Replace local leaders with “friendlier” ones
A Zhent agent might say:
“We don’t care who rules—just who signs the contracts.”
Fang – Recruit; expendable muscle or courier
Wolf – Trusted operative; muscle or specialist
Viper – Cell leader or lieutenant
Doom Raider – Regional commander or elite agent
