The Arcane Order was founded nearly 2,000 years before the Great Fracture by royal decree under Caecum I. Alarmed by the unregulated use of arcane magic, often in service to petty kings, cults, or private vendettas, Caecum sought to bind magic to the state and establish clear legal boundaries around its use. His vision was not merely political, but also philosophical: that magic, like law, must serve the common good, not individual ambition.

The earliest Order mages faced deep opposition from independent sorcerers, court wizards loyal to noble families, and religious orders, who viewed arcane power as dangerous or heretical. Attempts to standardise magical education were met with sabotage, political pushback, and even assassination. Several founding members died during the Year of Unseen Fires, a series of magical reprisals by rogue spellcasters. The Order was initially seen not as a noble institution but as a power grab.

Despite early turmoil, the Order succeeded in stabilising arcane scholarship. With royal backing and the historic, magical University of Serdos as a central authority, they forced local magical colleges to either join or be outlawed. Over time, Guild membership became synonymous with legitimacy. This consolidation granted the founding members the authority they sought—to shape the future of magical education and become stewards of civilisation’s arcane knowledge.
