The Knights of Reynesse were founded nearly three centuries ago following the Conflict with Cathringia and the loss of the lands west of the Strait of Schal. Alarmed by the vulnerability of their borders—often left to the mercy of a decentralised peasantry or indifferent Reynessen lords—the displaced survivors of the lost territories sought to bind the defence of the realm to a professional, autonomous order. Their vision was not merely defensive, but also redemptive: that the knight, like the vine, must be rooted in the soil it protects, serving the honor of the land, not the whims of individual lords.

The earliest Knights faced deep opposition from the established landed nobility, independent mercenary bands, and the Cathringian governors, who viewed the militarisation of the border as a provocation or an illegal seizure of power. Attempts to fortify the Reynessen Wall were met with diplomatic sabotage, political pushback, and even cross-border skirmishes. Several founding members died during the Night of the Broken Gate, a series of coordinated ambushes by Cathringian scouts. The Order was initially seen not as a noble protectorate but as a desperate band of revanchists.

Despite early turmoil, the Knights succeeded in stabilising the southern frontier. With the eventual royal grant of the Duchy of Gelschris as a central authority, they forced the disparate border militias to either join the Order’s discipline or be disbanded. Over time, membership in the Knights became synonymous with the survival of the kingdom itself.
