A character’s Perception Attribute determines their effective Line of Sight and sensory awareness in combat and exploration.
For ease of play, 10 Tiles (≈10 meters) is treated as the average reference unit.
A creature can perceive with full clarity and mechanical effectiveness within a range equal to:
Average Perception = 10 Tiles
Within this range, the character can clearly see, hear, smell, and sense auras allowing precise targeting, identification, tracking, and interaction.
This range defines how far a character can reliably hit or interact with a target in combat terms.
Being outside a creature’s effective Perception range does not mean the creature is blind or unaware. However, perception beyond this distance becomes increasingly compromised.
Perception degrades in clear stages:
Distance | Effect |
|---|---|
≤ Perception × 1 | Full detail and effectiveness |
≤ Perception × 2 | Partial information (blurred, muffled, unclear) |
≤ Perception × 4 | Presence only (movement, noise, or scent without detail) |
Beyond × 4 | Narrative only, no mechanical interaction |
Different senses fade at different rates:
Smell degrades first
Hearing degrades second
Sight degrades last
A character may smell something faintly, hear an indistinct sound, or see movement or silhouettes beyond their effective range, but cannot reliably identify, target, or react until the target enters full Perception range.
A character may have line of sight across vast distances (such as across an adjacent hex), but anything beyond their effective Perception range lacks the clarity and precision required for meaningful action.
Line of Sight allows awareness; Perception allows effectiveness.
Characters: Use standard Perception rules
Animals: One primary sense may count as one stage stronger
Monsters: May possess supernatural senses that ignore or alter degradation stages
