In specific situations, player characters may find themselves tasked with navigating a boat through challenging territories and events. During these scenarios, whether the ship’s captain is an NPC or PC, a D20 roll should be made against a predetermined difficulty level (5 for easy, 10 for medium, 15 for hard) to successfully navigate the challenge or face the potential risk of damaging the boat. Various challenges may include:
Navigating through a series of rapid currents, where the captain must skillfully steer the boat to avoid rocks and dangerous waters.
Sailing through a thick, magical fog that distorts vision and complicates navigation, requiring the captain’s intuition and knowledge to find a safe path. Encountering a powerful whirlpool that can potentially pull the boat into its depths, necessitating precise navigation skills to escape the gravitational pull.
Boat Damage Failure in effectively navigating a boat will lead to damage inflicted upon the vessel. Should the players (or NPCs) possess the necessary resources for boat repair, the process will demand a total of 1D10 Effective Hours. In the absence of such resources, a separate D10 roll is conducted to ascertain the extent of the boat’s damage.
Roll | Effect |
1 | Boat will sink within 1D10 hours |
2-5 | Boat will sink within 1D10 days |
6-9 | Boat cannot move further |
10 | Boat speed reduced by 50% |
Boat Racing Occasionally, a pursuit between vessels may occur. If characters decide to either pursue or escape from another vessel, a contested roll is initiated. Each boat engages in a roll based on its size. Smaller boats, being faster, use a D20, medium-sized boats roll a D12, and larger boats use a D10. A successful roll leads to a successful escape or pursuit, subsequently initiating combat mode.
