The Kingdom of Mooncry

Image

The Kingdom of Mooncry was forged in the aftermath of a devastating war between humans and vampires. What was once the land of Avalia became a sanctuary for a persecuted people and eventually an autonomous kingdom. Its gray canyons, barren mountains, and forgotten valleys bear the scars of its dark past.

Campaigning in Mooncry

Mooncry is defined by its dramatic geography: vast canyons, jagged cliffs, and towering mountains.
Most settlements rest along rivers or the coastline, but much of old Avalia remains wild, bleak, and steeped in danger.

Traveling through Mooncry means navigating forgotten ruins, cursed lands, and remnants of old conflicts. The region is rich with occult history, making it ideal for dark, atmospheric campaigns.

The People of Mooncry

The kingdom is primarily inhabited by Serenians, a people marked by collective trauma and centuries of persecution.
Serenians are:

  • Quiet, discreet, and deeply cautious

  • Rarely seen outside their homeland

  • Highly educated in medicine, necromancy, alchemy, music, and healing

Their culture revolves around study, precision, and an intimate understanding of life, death, and the spaces between.

Useful Lore

Mooncry no longer faces large-scale invasions thanks to its strong defenses and powerful alliances formed after the Second Age.
However:

  • Many outsiders still distrust or shun the Avalians due to lingering superstition.

  • Their association with former vampire captors fuels discrimination.

  • Old wounds, dark rituals, and cursed soil still shape the kingdom’s identity.

The Dangers of Mooncry

Avalia’s land is saturated with ancient magic and violent history.

Travelers face:

  • Curses and malignant energies

  • Remnants of vampire invasions

  • Haunted mountain paths and forgotten ceremonial sites

  • Necromancers who wander the land

  • The ever-present threat of vampire resurgence

The land itself feels alive with memory—much of it dangerous.

Avalian Customs

  • A king or queen is elected by the people.

  • Each city is governed by an elderman appointed by the sovereign.

  • All Avalians are trained in Necromancy, Necropsy, and Healing.

  • Many become Vampire Hunters, honoring their ancestral struggle.

  • Silence is sacred; ceremonies are often performed using sign language.

  • Hospitality is not a cultural expectation.

  • Death is central to their society:

    • Bodies are dissected rather than buried or burned.

    • Organs are harvested, traded, and studied.

  • Rogue necromancers known as Gravebinders animate the dead.

  • Harvesters travel the wilds collecting organs from monsters and men.

  • Dead monarchs are preserved in amber within mausoleums.

  • Criminals face mutilation, their organs repurposed for research.
