Four "Legends" are summoned to solve a mystery involving a purple artifact
in a strange village filled with glitches and odd characters...

Lost Legends | Episode 1 - The Director

This story begins with a flamboyantly dressed individual, known only as the Director, pacing backstage in the Grand Theater. His robes swirl with each step as he rifles through shelves, searching for specific books and scripts, his eyes sharp with purpose. Finally, he seizes a thick, ancient tome bound in dark leather and opens it with a flourish. With a powerful incantation, he summons Hríd, a legend from a distant world. Hríd appears, floating slightly above the ground, his form glowing with an otherworldly blue light. The Director approaches him, explaining that he has been summoned to aid in solving a dire problem.

Hríd, a hero from a world that once overthrew a tyrannical government, listens intently as the Director reveals the threat. A cursed book, radiating purple energy, threatens to unmake reality itself. The Director urgently needs Hríd’s help to neutralize the book’s dark power. Though skeptical, Hríd agrees to assist, but the Director reveals there are others they need for the mission. He tells Hríd he’ll summon two more legends, Thordan and Morub, who would aid them in their dangerous quest.

Soon, Thordan and Morub appear in the Grand Theater, both floating just above the ground as Hríd had been. Thordan instinctively draws his daggers, while Morub, his expression cautious, takes in the surroundings. The Director welcomes them with a sweeping gesture, explaining that they have been called to prevent a catastrophe. The fate of all worlds hangs in the balance; a corrupted magical artifact has slipped into another world, and the consequences could unravel existence itself. Without their intervention, every world—including those each of them have saved in the past—will fall.

After this, the Director decides he needs one more legend to give the group a fighting chance. Once more, chanting in unknown languages, he uses a dark tome to summon Belial, a demon. Catching him in the middle of a tragic monologue, the Director explains once more his need for his services and tries to convince the rather skeptical Belial to join the others.

Hríd, Thordan, Belial, and Morub, though wary, agree to help. The Director explains that the Grand Theater serves as a bridge between worlds, a stage for legends summoned from various realms. He admits to tempering their powers, ensuring they wouldn’t overpower their surroundings as they would have in their own worlds. As an incentive, he promises they will be richly rewarded and, more importantly, allowed to return to their worlds should they succeed. For some, he even hints at granting wishes for reunions with loved ones lost.

Our unlikely heroes arrive in the quaint village of Townsville, where they’re quickly aware of the oddness around them. Approaching a house to gather information, they encounter a dwarf who seems oddly “glitched,” repeating his words in a monotone. He mentions a stranger who came to town cloaked in purple smoke. Intrigued, the group heads to the bustling Market Square, noticing that the villagers seem stuck in a loop, repeating the same actions. Even a bird floats frozen mid-flight.

Undeterred, the heroes press on, questioning a variety of townsfolk, from a blacksmith with ordinary weapons to a farmer selling pungent cheese. Each villager has noticed the cloaked stranger with a purple object but provides few helpful details. A vegetable vendor mentions the stranger’s aloofness, while a toy-making dwarf adds that he has resided in Townsville for decades, watching visitors come and go. It’s clear something unnatural plagues the town. Armed with rather voluptuous cauliflowers and a sack with pungent cheese, the group learns they must find the barmaid.

As they delve deeper into Townsville’s mystery, the group meets an older woman, frantic with worry. Her daughter, Belinda, has been taken by a cloaked stranger with a purple artifact. Through her tears, she describes Belinda as a beautiful girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. The stranger threatened her and disappeared into the forest, possibly to a ruined tower or an old monastery. The barmaid offers the group a flask of potent moonshine for courage and promises a reward if they return her daughter safely.

Embarking on the road, the heroes share fragments of their pasts—Thordan, the Wood Elf, speaks of vague memories of his former life and having died. With memories hazy, they feel a lingering sense of duty pushing them forward. As they walk, they spot a waterfall, but something is amiss; the water is still, though the sound of rushing water fills the air. They toss a stone into it, which ripples the surface, yet the water remains unmoving. Belial insists on checking the waterfall, having a feeling he might find loot, similar to his demonic conquests.

Suddenly, they hear a distant wolf’s howl, warping into an eerie growl. Morub decides to mimic the sound, luring the creature closer, yet it is still far away. Following the trail, they reach a crossroads leading to four directions. Belial, ever defiant, tries to go towards the monastery, yet finds himself back at the crossroads. It seems this world leads them elsewhere, to the group's chagrin.

The heroes approach the watchtower, discovering it ruined and abandoned. Morub hears a woman's screams echo from within. Morub, Thordan, and Hríd enter the building, while Belial is investigating the intricate brickwork. Within they find most of the furniture collapsed and broken, with skeletal remains. As Morub rushes to the top, he peers into a swirling purple mist, glimpsing a creature with a large, glowing yellow eye, being instructed by the Stranger. Before they can react, undead wolves and other ghastly beings attack.

Battle ensues. Thordan’s arrows strike true, though the enemies prove resilient. The undead rise, time after time. Belial brutally slays the wolves. Finally, through teamwork and relentless attacks, the heroes bring down the last of the creatures. With the purple mist dissipating, the tower falls silent.

Using a harrowing undead spell, Belial resurrects one of the undead. The group questions the zombie, asking it the whereabouts of Belinda. The creature points them northward, toward an ancient monastery atop a cliff. This being, named Rob by the group, also reveals the cheeses made by the old lady can be restoring. Creating an unholy abomination, Hríd and Morub create a 'fondue' healing potion. After a brief rest, the group presses onward, surrounded by an eerie silence, toward the ruined monastery. Along the way, they pass a shrine to an unknown deity, but their minds remain focused on the path ahead.

Entering the monastery, they find a desolate scene—a desecrated altar, skeletal remains, and an ominous figure in purple garb standing at the far end. The figure holds a large, menacing blade and claims he was also once a legend, drawn by the Director to this world. He speaks of defying the Director, accusing him of creating a flawed system that traps heroes within an endless cycle of quests and worlds. The figure offers them a choice: Join him to destroy the system, through the power of the Void, or perish with it.

The heroes hesitate, but they glimpse a young woman, trapped within one of the figure’s corrupted minions, a Void creature, pleading for help. Realizing the stakes, they prepare for battle, deciding to fight the figure and free Belinda.

The battle is fierce, as the figure’s dark powers rival their own, but the heroes refuse to relent. Through their collective might, they defeat him, and with his final breath, the Broken Stranger vanishes, leaving behind a cursed book radiating purple energy. As reality begins to crack around them, a glowing blue portal appears.

The Director steps through, congratulating them and requesting the book’s return. Now the Director offers the heroes a choice: to become legends, to help fight against the spread of the Void in other worlds, or to rest eternally. As they gaze upon a starry expanse, worlds at risk of the consuming void, they reluctantly agree to take on the Director’s mission, vowing to protect existence from corruption.

In the end, the Director disappears, leaving the heroes alone in the Grand Theater. Here, they can read stories of their pasts, remember who they were, and perhaps find purpose anew, destined to face battles in stories yet untold.
