The White Necromancers are a solemn order devoted to the study of necromancy as a force of balance rather than destruction. Founded upon the teachings of Harmonia, the Mistress of Gentle Passage, they reject the common perception of necromancy as inherently malevolent. Their practices revolve around empathy, healing, and the preservation of harmony between the living and the departed. Though their name is seldom spoken, traces of their work linger wherever corruption has been undone or spirits rest undisturbed. They stand in alliance with The Covenant, sharing intelligence and purpose, yet remaining apart to safeguard their secrecy.
The first whispers of the White Necromancers date back to The Throne War, when battlefields lay drowned in blood and silence. Humanity's war against the Luminary lead to countless deaths, and some desperate Luminary attempted to use dark forces to strike humanity back with... their own army. They turned to unholy rites, binding corpses to their will in pursuit of victory over humankind. The dead marched again, stripped of dignity, and the balance between life and death was fractured. From this defilement arose a counterforce, yet they did not reveal themselves as an open order, but as hidden custodians who moved quietly among the carnage, consecrating the fallen, dismantling necrotic abominations, and shielding survivors from the residue of such corruption.
Some accounts claim Harmonia herself guided their earliest rites; but others argue they were humans and Luminary who answered her call in a time of crisis. After the Therianthropic Convergence, they were believed to be vanquished, as Mistress Harmonia's influence on Ignisar severely dwindled.
Enemies include the Black Virtuoso warlocks who raise the dead for power, and those who disturb the cycle of death for conquest or ambition. The order does not deny the darker aspect of death. They recognize the violent acts embodied by Virtuoso Mortemus, whose destructive path stands as a counterpart to Harmonia’s tranquility. This duality is central to their philosophy: only by acknowledging both peace and violence can one understand the full nature of mortality.
For centuries, they were thought destroyed, their existence a rumor. In truth, they endured in secret, aiding from the shadows. Their path intertwined with another fellowship. The Covenant, an order devoted to safeguarding equilibrium in all its forms. The White Necromancers became their white counterparts, guarding the veil of mortality while the Covenant watched over broader balances of power. Today, they remain both feared and revered: shepherds of the departed, custodians of balance, and silent watchers at the threshold of mortality.
The White Necromancers hold to three tenets:
Every soul deserves passage: Death is neither to be hastened nor delayed, but honored as a threshold.
Balance must be preserved: Where Harmonia offers serenity, Mortemus brings violence. Both are truths, but neither must dominate unchecked.
The living must be shielded: Necromancy is not a weapon to conquer, but a discipline to heal and protect against corruption.
Practices
Sacred Rites: Secret funerary rituals performed in ruins and battlefields, consecrating the dead so they cannot be raised again.
Cleansing: Counteracting necrotic taint in the wounded or cursed, often at great personal cost to the practitioner.
Communion: Rare and perilous séances conducted only under strict wards, allowing the living to hear what the departed could not say.
Academic Disguise: Their presence endures quietly in institutions like the Cursebreakers Academy, where teachings of Harmonia are interwoven with broader studies of divinity. Only a select few understand the true reach of their influence.
