The Tongue is a massive barrier sandbar connecting the eastern and western continents. During the calm summer months, winds and currents expose a broad expanse of dunes, gravel flats, and rocky ridges that caravans have crossed for centuries. With the arrival of winter storms, waves break over the low-lying land, submerging much of the crossing beneath the sea until spring returns.
