From the adventure notes of Danas, hero of Kania
Now, what is truly worth telling of is Skarzh. For although it is a Kanian allod, things there are quite different there.
The reason for this is the Great Mage Smaragd. Even before the Cataclysm, Smaragd was skilled at crafting all manner of clever contraptions. He had a passion for studying old mechanisms brought to him from ancient ruins. They say that in former times there lived peoples such as the Džun and the Hikut, who were absolute masters at creating various devices.
And so Smaragd spent his time pondering how to make something living out of the inanimate. Some things succeeded, others did not, but over time he became an increasingly skillful craftsman. Perhaps everyone has seen the clock in Kvator: it chimes, and various small figures dance and perform scenes. It was Smaragd who made it and presented it as a gift to Tenses.
And so the three of us set out for Skarzh. We were met there by wonders: statues stood about, each filled with gears, and each even had its own key. Smaragd's servants turn the keys, and these statues begin to move, offering bows and even attempting to say something with a creak.
Then, mechanical horses of the same sort run up to us, and their gears click and keys turn as well. We were seated upon these horses, and they carried us directly to the tower. Such are the wonders that take place there. Inside the tower itself, something is also constantly turning, spinning, and clicking.
We were on Skarzh that time on a trivial matter, but Smaragd himself told us a sorrowful tale. The local rulers had a clever daughter, and it so happened that a witch abducted her and hid her away somewhere. The Great Mage commissioned us to find the girl. And again, if I were to tell you all the twists and turns of that case, it would fill a thick volume of a book. I will only say that we succeeded in finding her. She was a sorceress herself and became Smaragd's apprentice when she had grown a bit older.
