Galeberry

Description

Clinging stubbornly to wind-whipped cliffs, jagged dune ridges, and salt-scarred promontories, the Galeberry is a hardy shrub unlike any other in the Shattered Lands. Its low, twisting branches hug the ground as though seeking shelter from the relentless gales, while its leaves are long, narrow, and iridescent, shifting in color from pale green to silvery-blue as the wind passes. Tiny clusters of glimmering berries hang from the tips, each one humming faintly with a sound like rushing air, so subtle it is almost inaudible above the roar of the sea.

The Galeberry is extraordinarily rare; it grows only where storms meet cliffs, and only in places where the soil has been enriched over centuries by salt, wind, and the dust of shattered stone. Harvesting it is perilous, requiring balance, timing, and a respect for the power of the elements.

Information

Windborne Agility: Consuming a handful of Galeberries grants extraordinary balance and reflexes for several hours, allowing climbers, sailors, and scouts to traverse cliffs, tightrope-like ridges, and turbulent terrain with ease.

Stormward Resistance: A tincture distilled from the berries enhances resistance to wind, cold, and stormy weather, making it highly prized among coastal adventurers and desert caravans.

Elemental Catalyst: When prepared carefully, the juice or oil of Galeberries can empower minor air or wind-based spells, or be added to potions to increase movement speed, leap distance, or aerial agility.

Natural Alarm: Placing a cluster of ripe berries near a campsite can act as a wind-sensitive warning system; the berries vibrate and hum when strong gusts or approaching threats stir the air.

History

Fisherfolk and cliff-dwellers call it the “Wind’s Heart”, believing the plant embodies the spirit of the air itself. Folklore claims that Galeberries only bloom fully when a tempest passes without taking life, and to eat one is to temporarily carry a fragment of the storm’s power within yourself.

Some herbalists swear that pairing Galeberry extract with coastal herbs such as Saltvein Thistle or Brinepetal Lily produces elixirs that let you run across waves, leap like the wind, or even glide short distances, though such concoctions are considered extremely dangerous and difficult to craft.
