Leveling Up in Elandorel

Leveling Up in Elandorel

In the world of Elandorel, when a character gains enough experience to reach a new level, their growth is not instantaneous. Instead, they must take a moment to rest, reflect, and internalize their newfound strength and abilities.

Leveling Process

  • When a character accumulates enough experience points to advance, their new abilities, hit points, and bonuses do not immediately take effect.

  • Instead, they fully gain the benefits of their new level at the end of their next short rest.

  • This represents the character processing their growth, allowing their body to adjust to its increased resilience, their mind to integrate new skills, and their magic or combat techniques to settle into place.

Narrative Justification

This system reinforces the idea that growth takes time and experience must be internalized. A fighter might feel their muscles adapting to new battle techniques, a rogue may refine a new evasive maneuver, and a wizard could experience the gradual alignment of arcane energies before wielding their new spells.

For roleplaying purposes, characters may describe this process as:

  • A moment of quiet meditation or reflection, feeling their power settle.

  • A brief sparring session to test out new combat techniques.

  • A wizard or cleric experiencing a rush of arcane insight or divine revelation.

  • A barbarian pushing their limits, feeling their body harden and instincts sharpen.

Impact on Gameplay

  • This system prevents sudden power spikes in the middle of combat, requiring characters to take at least a short rest before accessing new abilities.

  • It also provides a natural moment for roleplaying where characters can express how their newfound power manifests.

  • Dungeon Masters can use this to weave the leveling process into the story, incorporating visions, ancestral memories, or external influences that shape the character’s growth.
