Creating a backstory isn’t just for drama—it’s one of the most rewarding ways to bring your character to life and shape the world around you. In Elandorel, your past truly matters.
Here’s why every player is encouraged to write even a brief backstory:
Every character backstory grants you at least one minor goal—something personal to pursue alongside the main story.
This might be:
Reclaiming a lost relic
Redeeming a family name
Finding someone you left behind
These goals reward XP, drive personal story arcs, and give you clear direction for roleplaying and decision-making.
Backstories help root your character in Elandorel’s living world. Expect to encounter:
NPCs from your past (allies, enemies, or those you thought lost)
Locations tied to your homeland, childhood, or failures
Clues that reveal your connection to hidden histories or cosmic truths
The world will feel more personal—and the consequences more real—because your story is interwoven with it.
This isn’t just about your journey—it’s about your legacy.
Places, items, NPCs, or factions you mention in your backstory may become permanent parts of the campaign.
Some of the towns, dungeons, and relics that exist in Elandorel today were originally born from backstories in past campaigns.
What you write today could inspire quests, regions, or even entire story arcs for years to come.
Backstories may give you access to:
Trusted NPCs who support you (mentors, family, contacts)
Local reputations—good or bad—that affect how the world reacts to you
Valuable items, keepsakes, or debts owed that might come into play
These are story-driven advantages, not mechanical bonuses—and they grow with time.
If you're new to Elandorel or just not sure about your character's past yet, you won't be left behind.
You'll be offered three brief one-paragraph “starter motivations” before Session 1.
These serve as a light touch origin or drive, giving you a clear reason to adventure while keeping things flexible. You’ll choose one—and as you grow more comfortable in the world, we’ll work together to build it out over time.
Characters with clear wants, fears, and unfinished business become the soul of the game. Your choices will influence major decisions, shape relationships, and sometimes even alter the fate of the realm.
You might begin as a footnote in someone else’s legend—but end up the legend yourself.
Your backstory doesn’t need to be long. Just give us:
Who you were
What drives you
And what you left behind
The rest? We’ll discover together, one session at a time.
