Whether seen as a divine blessing or a heretical taint, this "Ashen Mark" is almost universally regarded as an outward sign of a soul touched by something beyond the mundane. Its meaning, however, differs greatly between the races and their connection to the energies of the world.
Amongst Hyuron, poliosis is most often a hereditary trait, a powerful echo of a legendary ancestor whose deeds or nature were so potent they left a permanent mark upon their bloodline. Great noble houses, particularly those descending from Saints of the Holy Spectra, are known to manifest these marks. Terms like the 'Fellner Moon' are given to these streaks, framing them as symbols of a heavy, often grim, destiny. For the Hyuron, who so deeply fear their own primal beast-ancestry, such a visible sign of being "set apart" is a double-edged sword. It is seen by some as a mark of divine favor and inherent strength, and by others as an unnerving taint, a sign of a soul already claimed by forces beyond mortal understanding.
For the long-lived and aether-sensitive Eldar, poliosis is less often a simple matter of heredity and more frequently a sign of a profound interaction with immense power. It can manifest as the "stain" left upon a soul directly touched by a god-like entity, such as the blade-saint Zhaine, marking them as a chosen instrument or a vessel of their will. Unlike the Hyuron mark, which is almost always present from birth, an Eldar's Ashen Mark can be acquired. It may appear suddenly after a great ritual, a battle where immense power was channeled, or a traumatic event involving a transfer of soul-essence. It is a physical testament that the bearer's very being has been fundamentally and irrevocably altered by divinity, magic, or another's potent spirit.
In rarer cases, such as with the half-living known as the Aeth'rendyr (dhampirs), the Ashen Mark serves as a stark visual representation of a soul at war with itself. For these beings afflicted with the "Discordant Blood," the white hair symbolizes the cold, entropic stasis of their vampiric curse and Aether-Anemic state. It stands in constant, vivid contrast to their natural hair color, which represents their living, Telluric heritage. Here, poliosis is not a mark of destiny or favor, but a permanent, visible reminder of the unending internal conflict that defines their tragic existence.
