If you are new to Dungeons & Dragons 5.5e, you can create and manage all your Kantas characters on D&DBeyond. You can also get a hold of the Basic Rules for free here before investing in a copy of the Player's Handbook.
Free Access to Sourcebooks!
The Kantas Expanse campaign uses D&DBeyond to give its players free, legal access to all official WotC sourcebooks. You can sign up for free on D&DBeyond and manage your Kantas characters there while able to read all the sourcebooks for free.
Check our Discord and ask for details and links to our Kantas D&D Beyond Campaigns.
To get started with Character Creation, first let's get you set up with in our D&DBeyond account. In the Campaign Links expand below, follow any one of the links to get started. If it doesn't have a nice big 'Create a Character' button, then it's full and please choose another link. There should be space and it doesn't matter which you end up in.

You can create multiple characters in the one campaign you are part of, but please be aware that campaigns are limited to 99 active characters. We might need to ask some characters not in use to be made inactive if the limit is reached.
Each section below details the rules for what is available in the Kantas Expanse campaign when creating your character.
When you click Create a Character, the first page is a bunch of settings about what rules you want to use for this character. In the expansion below is a guide to what to select and why, to make sure your character is legal.

Thanks to Jamie J for compiling this list originally!
For species, legal options are listed out specifically. For all other options, like classes, sub-classes, backgrounds, and spells, make sure they come from one of the Legal Sourcebooks.
Legacy Rules
Dungeons and Dragons has had some big rules updates over time, and some of the old rules are still present in D&DBeyond. D&DBeyond uses the updated rules by default, but watch out for Classes, Species, Spells, etc. marked Legacy - you don't want to select those. When in doubt, ask away in the Discord!
When choosing your PC's class and future subclass, we allow options from the Core Rules, and any Expanded Rules which are not labelled as Legacy. The full list is below.
Select which class you would like to play, and then click Add Class when prompted.
Select your level, and make any choices you are prompted to, indicated by the Exclamation Marks. You can also add additional classes, look at Optional Features and manage Spells from this menu.
If you're not sure on any decisions, you can proceed to the next steps and come back to any choices here later.
Starting Level
If you're new to Kantas, your character will start at Level 2. For details on levelling up and starting a character at a higher level, see the Character Progression page.
Arcane Archer (5e)
Cavalier (5e)
Rune Knight (5e)
Samurai (5e)
Note: the Purple Dragon Knight, Echo Knight and Gunslinger are not legal subclasses.
Way of the Kensei (5e)
Way of the Sun Soul (5e)
Note: the Way of the Cobalt Soul is not a legal subclass.
Note: If selecting an older sub-class, the resources 'ki' and 'focus' are equivalent.
Oath of Conquest (5e)
Oath of the Crown (5e)
Oath of Redemption (5e)
Oath of the Watchers (5e)
Oathbreaker (5e)
Note: the Oath of the Open Sea is not a legal subclass.
Divine Soul (5e)
Storm Sorcery (5e)
Note: Lunar Sorcery is not a legal subclass.
Order of Scribes (5e)
War Magic (5e)
Note: Chronurgy and Graviturgy are not legal subclasses.
You can choose any non-Legacy Background. Select one and then make any additional choices prompted by Exclamation Marks.
House Rule Alert - The Lucky Feat
The Origin Feat 'Lucky' is banned in Kantas. If you select the Merchant or the Wayfarer Background, it gives you the Lucky Feat by default. We are replacing this Origin Feat as follows:
Merchant -> Skilled
Wayfarer -> Alert
To resolve this:
Finish creating your Character as normal.
When you get to your completed Character Sheet, go to the Features & Traits menu and select Feats.
Click on the Lucky Feat, and in the sidebar, click Delete.
Then click on Manage Feats, and add the relevant Feat as per above.
As ever, any questions or assistance needed, just let a DM know!
You can also choose the "Custom Background" option to create something custom within the options in D&DBeyond. When in doubt, just ask a DM about this and we'd be happy to help.
PC Backstories!
Beyond just your background, the KDMs would love to hear about your PCs backstory! Where did they come from? Why are they adventuring?
We have a folder where we hoard them like gold. If you want, you can type it in a Google Doc and send the link to any of the DMs. It will then be added to the folder so that all DMs can see it and make use of your backstory knives whenever it suits us.
And do note: it doesn't have to be finished or polished or spell checked - it can be detailed as heck or a rough outline. It can also be sent at any level. All are good and valid options. So go type up your backstory and send it over!
When choosing your PC's species, we allow options from the Core Rules, and any Expanded Rules which are not labelled as Legacy. The full list is below:

Backgrounds and Species from Older Books
Backgrounds in older D&D books don’t include ability score adjustments. If you’re using a background from an older book, adjust your ability scores by increasing one score by 2 and a different one by 1, or increase three scores by 1. None of these increases can raise a score above 20.
Similarly, species in older books include ability score increases. If you’re using a species from an older book, ignore those increases and use only the ones given by your background.
Also, if the background you choose doesn’t provide a feat, you gain an Origin feat of your choice.
From Player's Handbook (2024), pg 38, "Adjust Ability Scores"
Use the Equipment options of your chosen species, class, and background; alternatively, if you have a specific vision you can trade equivalent starting equipment. We encourage characters to start with the explorer's pack rather than choosing between different packs.
Do start with whatever alignment feels right for your character, but know that this is not license to be rude to others at the table, in or out of character. See our Code of Conduct for more information.
A Note to Players
Related to the Alignment section above, this is an open and shared campaign and, therefore, we ask that players try to adopt a “yes, and” approach when it comes to sharing the campaign with others. Please be flexible, sometimes toes may get stepped on unintentionally when it comes to characters overlapping in activities, we ask that you maintain being a cooperative player for the sake of everyone's fun.
We encourage our players to create their own avatars, otherwise using art licensed for non-commercial redistribution, or getting permission to use existing art from the owner. We also have some budding artists among us if you'd like to involve them. Otherwise, we also have a list of recommended Avatar Creators on our forum here.
Both options are available in the Kantas Expanse campaign; Feats in place of Ability Score Increase, and multi-classing at any level as long as the Ability Score requirements are met.
