Iron Maw Cipher

A battered leather folio found in the desk of Rodrik Halvard's warehouse office in Loereth. The pages are stained with ink and coffee. The handwriting shifts between careful notation and hurried scrawl — entries added over months as new codes arrived in correspondence. Several entries are crossed out and rewritten. The margins contain small notes in a different hand — corrections from someone who reviewed Rodrik's work at least once.

Manifest Format

How to read an Iron Maw shipping manifest:

[Origin Code] → [Destination Code] | [Product Code] x [Quantity] | [Status]
[Date — uses day count from new year, not month/day]
[Handler initials]

Example from seized documents:

A1 → L1 | Ore x 3 | Green
Day 247
RH

Translation: Three cracked void cores shipped from Altoria Veins district to Rodrik's Loereth warehouse. Operational. Day 247 of the current year. Rodrik receiving.

The Thornpeak Syndicate

Rodrik's notes on the front company:

The Thornpeak Syndicate doesn't exist. I made the letterhead. S gave me the name and told me to register it as a prospecting consortium in Loereth's merchant rolls — costs 2 gold, no questions asked. All outgoing core documentation uses Thornpeak provenance stamps. The ink is specially mixed — looks like standard Guild assessment ink under normal inspection, but an alchemist with a DC 20+ check could tell the difference. S said the Thornpeak name was chosen because it sounds boring enough that no one would investigate it. She was right.

Entries Rodrik Didn't Understand

These appear in correspondence but Rodrik couldn't decode them. His annotations suggest frustration.

Code / Phrase

Context

Rodrik's Notes

"Anchor"

Appears in field reports from S

"Something they leave behind at a site? Not a core."

"Seed"

Appears alongside "anchor"

"Maybe the same thing? S wouldn't explain."

"The asset"

Referenced in Kwehn'raa reports

"Something extracted. Not a core — they already coded cores as Ore. Something else."

"Bloom"

Appears once in a letter from command level

"No idea. The letter wasn't for me. It was in a sealed envelope inside my regular drop."

"Phase two"

Referenced twice

"I asked S. She said I wouldn't be around for it. I didn't ask again."

Black (status code)

Never used in Rodrik's time

"S said if I ever see Black on a manifest, leave the warehouse immediately and don't go back."
