Overview

Clannmore Tairn is a steep-sided gorge cut into the high grey country above Gunnhildr, an old and ill-omened place the folk of the Vale have avoided for generations. A cold mountain stream pours from its mouth, the only way in, and stories of children who wandered up to it and never came home have long kept the living away. Of late those stories have proven true: the Tairn is a lair of red-capped fey.

The Land

The Tairn is a single narrow cleft in the high ground, its grey rock walls climbing steep on either side of a turbulent but clear stream that runs down its center and out the mouth. Smaller caves branch off the valley floor. There is only one way in above ground, at the gorge's mouth, and the broken, boulder-strewn slopes above make the whole place a natural killing-ground for anyone who knows it. An old trail climbs to it from the wooded hollows below, worn now by iron-shod boots coming and going.

Life & Dangers

The Tairn is home to redcaps, small, cruel fey who kill for the joy of it, led by Branwen Bloodboots. They favor the gorge for its single entrance and broken ground, striking from ambush and fading back among the rocks. At the mouth stand two weathered statues of soldiers from some long-vanished kingdom, old stone sentinels that no longer guard what they once did. Between the fey, the cold water, and the steep ground, nothing about the Tairn is safe for the unwary.

Lore & Beliefs

Gunnhildr folk keep away from the Tairn and warn their children off it, and the old clans of the hills would skirt it and never camp near. The tales name it taboo fey ground, a place where those who go in are not seen again. Among those who know the fey, the things that den there are counted the cruel lesser kin of the Wild Hunt, far beneath the archfey of the Lady's courts, but no less deadly for it.
