Sailors returning late spoke of a shadowy figure cloaked in mist, in the likeness of the Mournful Mariner, and swore they saw it embrace Alaina before both figures sank beneath the waves. Now, on stormy nights, a few claim to see two ghostly shapes gliding together just under the surface, as if dancing to some unheard melody. Some say it is Alaina and her sailor reunited in death; others believe the Mariner has taken her as his companion. Either way, the tale endures as a reminder of the dangers of both love and the sea.
