Stavren is a land of forests and snowy hills, but to locals it is known as the ancient home of the Alcatha. The trees of the forest, ancient and tall, stand proud as some of the last primordial woods that still remain largely untouched by civilization. This land, bordered by the northern seas, is one of freezing blizzards and bright starry nights. A peculiarity of the land so far north, known only to those inhabitants of The High North, is that on some nights an unique celestial event can be seen. This event is known as the Northern Lights, and is a true marvel of nature that awes all who witness it.
The Alcatha tribe is a solitary tribe of Firbolg who live at the utmost northern reaches of the North. They consist mainly of Firbolg, Loxodon and all who honor the old ways and practice the old faith, far from the lands of civilization. Up in the far North, they study the stars, celestial bodies and the heavens themselves to determine the best course for the tribe, and to divine the future of the land.
As a mostly neutral tribe, the Alcatha keep to their own, although members have been sent out on matters of great importance. They act like diviners for those who know of them and are fierce advocates of the olden ways. They study the stars and look ahead to the future, leaving them little interest in most matters of the material world, such as politics, war and material wealth. To study the signs above is to understand how all life is a small part of the greater whole, leading those of the tribe to live in harmony with nature and the world around them. In their long history however, the Alcatha have found a place of their own among the clans of the North. On occasion, they act as spiritual advisors and counselors to the different clans of the North, mostly staying away from the political squabbles and inter-faction wars. When their lands, traditions, or the olden faith is threatened however, their response can be swift and as uncaring as the cold winter nights they experience while studying the stars.
While the land in the North has remained largely untouched by most civilization, those who travel all the way North might glimpse the Circle of Stars. This is a great monument build from primordial stone blocks standing in a circle, with a single stone block in the middle functioning as an altar. Ancient legend tells of a great stone that fell from the heavens, with the stone blocks encircling the exact spot where legend tells this comet landed. This monument, large even by the standards of half-giants, can be seen as a central landmark from far away. On special days, such as the solstice, the greatest stargazing shamans of the Alcatha perform their rites and study the Northern Lights when they appear.
