The Birth of a Magical World

Ysterra began as many worlds do—primordial, unstable, and still forming. Its fate changed when a dying celestial being fell from the heavens and came to understand a difficult truth: beings of deific power often bring catastrophe to the worlds they touch.

Rather than perish and leave destruction behind, the celestial being chose a different end. In the final moments of its existence—moments that stretched into an eternity by mortal reckoning—it released its dying essence into the young world below.

That act changed Ysterra forever.

The celestial power infused the world with magic and gave rise to the first Ascendent—the Primals. Over the ages, other Ascendent would emerge as individuals awakened to fragments of that same divine essence. Though they differ in temperament, philosophy, and methods, all Ascendent share a common charge: to safeguard Ysterra from the dangers that exist beyond it in the wider multiverse.

They do not rule the world as gods over mortals, but their influence is undeniable. Some act as distant wardens, watching for threats that might breach the boundaries of the world. Others guide civilizations, believing a stronger and wiser society is the best defense against forces beyond Ysterra. A few intervene directly when they believe the balance of the world is at risk. Throughout history, their actions have shaped the fate of Ysterrans—sometimes with wisdom, and sometimes with consequences no one could foresee.

The celestial’s final act left two enduring legacies.

The first was the Ascendent, beings awakened to defend the world from dangers beyond it. The second was the transformation of Ysterra itself. The release of that divine power fractured a single ancient supercontinent into many landmasses, scattering magic across the world and embedding it into the planet’s very foundations.

It is a world where the supernatural is not rare—it is fundamental.

The Heavens Above

Ysterra orbits within a binary star system formed by the suns Yiedra and Orynn, two celestial bodies locked in a constant dance across the sky.

Yiedra, the larger of the pair, casts a bright golden light over the world. Orynn burns with a softer orange glow. When both suns share the sky, their light blends into vivid hues that shift across the horizon. Across Ysterra’s many cultures, the movements of these twin suns have inspired countless myths, omens, and traditions.

Three moons also circle the world:

  • Lunara, the smallest, a rocky gray sphere.

  • Lunarin, a volcanic moon whose eruptions sometimes cause blue and red flares visible from Ysterra’s surface.

  • Lunaris, the largest and most distant, a swirling purple world whose atmosphere casts a faint violet glow across the night sky.

Together, these moons exert enormous tidal forces on the oceans. Their combined pull churns the seas into violent, unpredictable currents. Because of this, large-scale ocean travel across the Prime Sea is extremely dangerous and historically rare.

For much of history, this isolation shaped the development of Ysterra’s civilizations.

The Continents of Ysterra

Eight major continents spread across Ysterra’s surface, each home to distinct peoples, ecosystems, and cultures. For most of recorded history, these continents developed largely independent of one another, separated by oceans too unstable for reliable navigation.

Among them, the continent of Insaris stands apart.

Vast beyond comparison, Insaris rivals the combined size of many other continents. Its landscapes are remarkably varied, from the towering Aelres Mountains to the shimmering Opal Sands, the winding Red Canyons, and the scattered Riven Isles.

At the heart of Insaris lies the Sea of Intrescil, a vast inland sea whose waters remain mysteriously calm despite the violent tides that plague the rest of Ysterra’s oceans. The origins of this anomaly are tied to one of the most catastrophic events in recorded history.

More than thirty distinct civilizations exist across Insaris alone, and its population approaches a billion people drawn from countless ancestries and cultures.

The Age of Artifice

For most of history, distance defined life on Ysterra, even if most were not aware of it.

The oceans were too dangerous to cross regularly. Vast deserts, mountains, and wilderness divide regions even within the same continent. While magic offered many wonders, it struggled to overcome many of these barriers. Legends speak of ancient spells and artifacts capable of transporting travelers across great distances, but those magics have largely vanished from the world.

Now, a new age may be beginning.

Across Ysterra, scholars and artificers have begun blending magical principles with engineered design. These innovations—often referred to collectively as magical artifice—are producing devices once thought impossible. Experimental land vehicles powered by arcane energy now travel at remarkable speeds, and early attempts at sky-sailing vessels hint at a future where travel may take place above the violent seas rather than through them.

These technologies remain young and unpredictable, but their implications are profound.

For the first time in history, the continents of Ysterra may soon be able to reach one another.

Trade, diplomacy, exploration—and conflict—may spread across the world in ways never before possible.

Ysterra stands at the edge of a new era.
